Khao lak beaches in August

We are looking at 3-4 nights in Khao Lak in August as part in of a larger trip to Thailand. The purpose of our time in Khao Lak is to enjoy some relaxing beach time. I'm aware this is not the best time to go, but we cannot change dates ( there to celebrate a 50th). After some research,I get the impression this is a very quiet time inKhao Lak.My concern that as it is low season, the beaches/sea may be rough and a lot of the beach restaurants may be closed.

Would welcome any thoughts as to if Khao Lak at this time of year would be worthwhile.....any alternative suggestions most welcome

Low Season is quiet but a growing number of your fellow countrymen are finding its peace and tranquility and plenty of places to eat and drink an irresistible attraction with many return visitors. I'm sure replies to that effect will soon be made.

The ocean at any destination on the West (Andaman) Coast (Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Ko Lanta, Phi Phi) is rough from May to October with Phuket's beaches in particular being declared unsafe with unfortunately a number of fatalities from drowning every year. To part compensate accommodation prices are often half of those in the Dry Season and those in August on the Gulf Of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Hua Hin, Cha Am among others) where it is High Season and best weather.

Indeed many beach restaurants close because of beach conditions but if that is a high priority there are some set back from the beach adjacent to the 5* J W Marriott on Khuk Khak Beach and a long row on Pak Weeb Beach, the most beautiful of Khao Lak's Beaches near the 5* Pullman, 5* Adult Only Beyond and 4* family orientated Mai Khao Lak resorts which are also accessible across the creek on Bang Sak Beach (subject to state of creek) at the 4* Manathai Resort. These though are about 25 minutes north by shuttle or taxi from the main towns of Bang La On and Biang Niang where most restaurants, shops, bars and markets are located.

If you view the forum on a PC or laptop you will see one of the Top Question FAQs on the right "What is the weather like in the Wet Season?" which contains many comments from visitors who enjoy visiting Khao Lak in the Green or Wet Season.

At the moment very high with cyclone conditions now subsiding but generally higher as it is the Monsoon Season which is wind that brings rain.

If your dates are locked in and you had planned to travel to Khao Lak then give it a go.

Even if it rains, 3 to 4 nights as part of a larger Thailand holiday won't turn out to be a disaster.

From experience, you could get 4 perfect days, or you could get 4 days of rain, but unlikely.

There is still plenty to do and plenty of wonderful restaurants to experience good quality thai food.

We will be there which will be our 8th low season in a row.

Can't be all that bad!

Winds can be strong when a thunderstorm or squall come through.

We rent a beach bungalow and find the afternoon sea breeze (5km/hr) refreshing, especially when it gets a bit humid.

Amazing how any breeze disappears when you move 100m inland.
