Koh Tachai closed indefinitely from 15th October 2016

Koh Tachai and all the shoreline, beaches and coral reefs around Koh Tachai island in the Similan National Park will remain closed indefinitely from 15th October 2016. The closure aims to ease negative effects on natural resources and the environment as a result of heavy tourism activities in the Similan National Park.

Tunya Netithammakul, Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation, said the measure is part of the master plan for marine resource management in the Andaman Sea.

He warned tourists that even though the closure has been advised 3 months in advance some tour companies may still try to sell tours there after October 15th.

Hardly surprising the increase in tours that have been allowed since the island was opened to the public. We went on one of the inaugural tours and were told boats would be limited to 3 per day. Recent reports were of upwards of 30 per day with hundreds of tourists trampling on the inshore reef.

do you really believe?

For the protection of coral it would be desirable.

I remember the last similar message from September 9, 2015.

Nothing has happened.

No reason to believe it is not true and given the amount of damage and careless trampling of the corals reported from friends who went their this last High Season, it is very necessary. I don't recall the last announcement being part of a wide ranging plan that involves other areas like this one. It is being reported world wide so if it is untrue there will be a lot of face saving necessary.

Good call by the Thai authorities, I just hope they stick to it and the suggested Maya Bay closure at Phi Phi

Now, the question becomes -

Will the closure be enforced?
