Where to go after Khao Lak?

Hi all,

First time posting. Booked a deal at The Sands Kao Lak for 8 nights in August. First time in Thailand with about a week more available. Asking for suggestions about where to go next. Kho Samui?

Not nightclubbers, more foodies and scenery lovers, but do enjoy beach and cocktails by the pool.

Would also love guidance about transfers, not self drive. Accom budget about AU$150 per night, (given deal was less than AU$100 B&B). Over to you,

We just did 8 at the Sands and then 6 at Nangthong Bay Resort but we are KL addicts

Maybe do a few nights on Phuket and a couple on Phi Phi. We find Deevana Patong Resort very good value.

August is Dry Season on the Gulf of Thailand. So Koh Samui or Koh Phangan should enjoy more certain weather but accommodation will be full price and far more expensive than remaining on the West Coast, Phuket, Krabi, Ko Lanta for instance. Do you necessarily want another beach destination?

Ao nang near Krabi could be a good option.

$A150 will get you some good quality accommodation in August.

We have done a transfer with Boss (about 2400 baht) or the mini van transfer (about 500 baht each). Prefer Boss in a private car for comfort.

Options for tours out to a couple of islands and Railay beach if the weather is good.

PS. Our avatar photo was taken off Ao nang, August 2015.

Hired the long tail boat for the day and cruised some islands on a beautiful day.

Even saw a sea snake when we were snorkelling. :-)

Thanks for the replies. Our concern is about the high chance of poor weather at KL. Is it likely to be a greater reliability in the Krabi region in mid-August or do we really need to go to the Eastern side (accepted no guarantees)? Yes we do prefer a beach location.

Cheers

Krabi is on the same side of Thailand as Khao Lak, so the weather is likely to be similar as the monsoon winds hit. As already mentioned, you would get better weather and sea conditions on the east coast, so Samui and Phangan and it's fairly easy to get to by car or bus. If beach is important to you and you want to experience the calm, clear waters that you see in brochures then head east.

Have you looked at the Top Question FAQs on the right of the forum, best viewed on a PC or laptop. In particular there is one "What is Khao Lak like in the Wet Season" where you will find links to lots of regular Wet Season visitors whose comments may alleviate your concerns about "the high chance of poor weather" in Khao Lak which is far from a given.
