Khao Lak - Karon, Phuket

I am a bit nervous about getting shot for asking this question but we are planning to go to Phuket in October and stay in Karon Beach. I have been there before and we have enjoyed it and have been able to swim in the sea.

Can anyone tell me what the positives are for staying in Khao Lak over Karon/Phuket ? Are you able to swim in the sea in October ?

Thanks in advance.

Swimming in the sea is not advised on Karon Beach throughout the Wet Season as it is prone to rip tides. Whilst the sea is rough along Khao Lak's 25km coastline of beaches it does not have the record of casualties that Phuket in general and Karon in particular has but care needs to be exercised accordingly especially as with the exception of a few hotels there are no lifeguards.

Khao Lak is no where near as commercialised as Karon (nor especially the neighbouring Patong) which is just one beach, compared with Khao Lak's nine of various lengths and with accommodation on each of various standards. There are two main townships in Khao Lak, Bang La On and Bang Niang where most restaurants, bars and shops within easy access of their beaches are located. The one McDonald's in Khao Lak is the only sign of westernised commercialism.

There is plenty of information on Khao Lak in the Top Questions on the right when you use a PC or laptop.

Here are latest pics of Khao Lak's beaches for comparison purposes with Karon https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297…

Hope this helps.

I think it depends on what you are looking for. I have been to Khao Lak and loved it but didn't like Phuket at all. Granted we did stay in Patong however did visit Karon/Kata and still found the traffic and busyness too much and we wouldn't consider staying there.

Khao Lak has enough to keep you occupied if you want it, plenty of great restaurants and bars but quiet.

Having slayed in both, if khao lak was a 10, then karon would be a 3

so many far nicer beaches, less chance of a rip taking you out to sea, and a far more pleasant outlook, period......

Thank you so much for this great information.

I initially went to Karon on advice that it was better to swim on the east side than the west side of the island in October.

Would you each have a favourite hotel around 2500 Baht per night which has access to a beautiful beach.

Thank you again

Value for money, excellent location direct on Nang Thong Beach, easy walking distance to many restaurants, bars and shops, Nang Thong Beach Resort or Nang Thong Bay Resort.

I second those suggestions, we stayed Nang Thong Beach Resort, on one trip, very nice, but go up to the main street for breakfast, although they do one, basic at best.

Oh, and if you are staying early October the rates are Half Price

I also suggest the Nang Thong Resorts - the beachfront bungalows are 1500 baht/night between May 1 and October 15. Ive stayed in Karon twice and loved it because of the hotel I was in but as far as the general area goes I would far rather be in Khao Lak - less commercial, less busy and just a lovely atmosphere.
