There is loads of information about Khao Lak on the Top Question FAQs on the right hand side of the forum when you view it on a PC or laptop which will give you background to help make your decision. Khao Lak isn't an island. It is a coastal area just over an hour north from Phuket Airport comprising over 25 km of glorious beaches, two main townships, Bang La On and Bang Niang with most restaurants, bars and shops, accommodation to suit all budgets and cuisine all tastes, laid back and non-commercialised.

August is the middle of the Wet Season and you should expect some rain but also plenty of sun. The sea will be rougher in this period and there are no trips to the very popular Similan, Surin and other islands allowed from mid-May to mid-October. Apart from at very still times and in a few places near rocks the water is never crystal clear because of its constant movement.

For accommodation it is a good idea to have a look at such as Booking.com and search for your dates and budget and then come back for more information to help you decide.

Hope this helps.

As Arandora says, it is 'green season'. If you want guaranteed beach weather and clearer seas you need to be on the other side of the coast - like Koh Samui which you've already mentioned. From what I've read, KL weather is changeable in August.

You can tell this is the case by looking at the hotel prices. They drop quite a lot in our summer and peak in our winter - the drier season. Likewise, Koh Samui and the East is the reverse - cheaper in the winter.

I'm not saying don't go, but you need to be prepared. Perhaps look at some trip reports at this time of year to read peoples' experience of the weather.

Have you been to Hua Hin - it looks nice and should have better weather in August. It is mainland coast though - not an Island. I haven't been but if we return in our summer, I'd consider here rather than Koh Samui.

We travelled in August, weather was fine - couple of rainy spells that passed quickly. We stayed at The Sands - 16 year is old enough to use adult pool and hotel is on the beach which was quiet at that time of year. Strong undercurrents in the sea at that time so not good for swimming. Hotel near restaurants or take a Tuk Tuk to the market. We will be returning this year but staying at The Leaf Oceanside this time - a cost decision as we now need 2 rooms with our 13 year old.
