Where is Khao Lak "center" or town?

Staying in Khao Lak in March so been doing some reasearch about local area. Bit confused as lots of referrals to Khao Lak "center" or town. Is this the same place as Bang Niang? We are staying at Kantary Beach and will mostly eat at local beach restaurants there as seem to have good reviews but if we wanted an evening in "town" for a bit more activity eg shopping and market where should we head for? And how far from the Kantary Beach? Once you are in "town" is it easy to get a taxi back to hotel or better to pre book a return journey? Also rough idea of taxi cost from Kantary Beach. Thanks

There are two main townships in Khao Lak, the main one is Bang La On where there are most restaurants, bars and shops and is often referred to as Khao Lak, Khao Lak Town, Khao Lak Centre or just Khao Lak. It is the first town you reach coming over the mountain from Phuket.

The second main one is Bang Niang where you will find the main Bang Niang Market - see recent topic "Khao Lak Markets". It is about 10 minutes up the highway coming from Bang La On, so nearer to the Kantary which is about 20 minutes further on.

There are plenty of taxis in both to and from the Kantary and price 300-350 baht.

Thanks Arandora. That's made things a lot clearer. Have a mental image now. Have read the posts on markets and also a lot of your other posts. You are a mine of helpful information. You should think about writing a guide book to area!! Seriously!

Just one point which was touched on - if you get a taxi into 'town', can you just pick one up to return or do you need to prebook?

Thank you!

Kantary also runs a free shuttle into Bang Niang and Bang La On a few times a day. There are great restaurants in both townships as well as on the beach so explore and enjoy. The Boatyard, a 10 minute stroll up the beach to the south of Kantary is one of our favourites.

The Centara Seaview is located towards the centre of Bang La On immediately behind McDonald's and is about a 20 minute walk from the Moracea the first part downhill from the Moracea so last part uphill to it.

Have a look at this link for other beachfront hotels either side of the Moeacea, to the left on Sunset Beach (called North Beach on this link) and to the right on Nang Thong Beach true-beachfront.com/beach-hotels/…d3-112

The Seaview main entrance and part accommodation is on the highway side of the beach road so is not shown on this link but it has beachfront accommodation across the beach road too. It is located near where you see "Sea Sand" on the Nang Thong Beach map.
