I've never been to khao lak but I'm going on the 19th April. I've been doing some research on different island trips. There are similian Islands, tachai, surin. Prathong, Koh kam, phi phi island and James Bond island. The prices are around 2,500 to 3,500 baht for adults, for children they are considerably cheaper. There seems to be several tour companies to choose from that are based in khao lak. Hope this helps :)

If you mean speedboat day trips to the islands for snorkelling, prices are very competitive and best booked at lower prices than on line when you arrive. Most travel shops use the same operators. Immediately to the left of The Pullman on the beach is the Rim Lay Restaurant where you can book trips. To the right and across the creek past the Beyond Resort is a row of upwards of 20 restaurants, bars and massage places leading to the Mai Khao Lak Resort. You can book tours at a number of these. Some offer local trips along the coast on a longtail boat if you don't particularly want to go snorkelling. The Pullmam also has a tour shop near Reception where you can get an idea of what is on offer and their prices then compare with the others locally.

Prices will vary depending on availability and since you are coming at a busy time (just after Easter and before Songkran, Thai New Year, on the 13th) demand may be quite high so best to shop around.

We are visiting Khao Lak for the first time in August (have previously stayed in Cape Panwa). Are there boat trips available at that time of year as I know the seas are rougher

Thanks

Not directly from Khao Lak as the Similan and Surin Islands and Koh Tachai and surrounding areas are all closed by order of the Nation al Parks Authorities from 15th April to 15th October each year. You can still enjoy trips yo Phang Nga Bay, which is a sheltered bay, fom Khao Lak.
