Where to stay - Khao Lak

Thinking about a trip next winter, with kids (3 and 6). JW Marriott looks like it would have a lot going on for the kids, but i really really hate big resorts. And it seems as though the hotel is remote. My wife and I honeymooned at Twin Palms on Surin Beach and really liked dining at the neighboring shacks on the beach. I also remember the water being clear and calm. That would be great for the kids. Would like to try a different area this time. Could you recommend a part of Khao Lak that would have restaurants within walking distance and on a nice stretch of beach. Not looking for loungers as far as the eye can see. Hows the area around Pullman Hotel?

thank you

Forget comparisons with Phuket. Khao Lak doesn't have loungers as far as the eye can see. 25km of glorious uncommercialised beaches with beautiful mainly clear beaches as far as the eye can see. You can see pics and some videos to date this high season including Khuk Khak Beach where the JWM is located and Pak Weeb Beach where the Pullman is located at tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k…

The JWM is nearer to the main townships of Bang Niang and Bang La On, being about a 10 minute or so shuttle or taxi ride away. It has a row of beach restaurants immediately to its right, some more to the left and a couple more near the main entrance. The sea here is quite rough with waves that kids love to play and body or boogie board in. The ground floor rooms all have direct access into a "river" that flows around the resort connecting to the main pool and swim up bars.

The Pullman is a bigger resort with more accommodation types and is located on the best part of Pak Weeb Beach, the best beach in Khao Lak. It is in a sheltered bay so much calmer for swimming. It is further north than the JWM being about 20 minutes or so to Bang Niang and Bang La On. There are plenty of beach restaurants a short walk to the right past the Beyond Resort and across the creek to the next stretch of beach.

Other beachfront resorts for you to consider that are child friendly are the 4* Sands Resort and 4* Laguna Resort at opposite ends of Bang La On and Nang Thong Beach just down the highway from it.

Hope this helps.

The Laguna is the first resort on Nang Thong Beach and right at the beginning of Bang La On. The main resort area, pool and beach restaurant overlook the beach with a footbridge going over to the villa accommodation which is set on grass overlooking the beach which has rocks at that point . The beach at the the Pullman is the best in Khao Lak IMO, both visually and for swimming.

What is Aspara beach like? I see there is a kids club there as well. Is this a good option with small children? Are there restaurants within walking distance?

thanks

The Apsara is located facing the lovely but remote Pakarang Beach on Cape Pakarang with just a couple of restaurants, Memories which has a surf club, and Rim Lay 2 on the beach and some others on the beach road. Otherwise you are 20/25 minutes by shuttle or taxi from Bang Niang/Bang la On. Plenty of information in recent posts on the Apsara that will save repeating.
