Suggestions for April 2016 trip

Hi there. Coming over in April 2016 for 31 nights with wife and 6 yr old.

Looking at spending 4 nights in nai yang at either nai yang resort or seapines.

Stayed at NY resort before, any thoughts on seapines?

Then kata for 8 nights and then up to khao lak for 17 nights.

Last 2 nights maybe back to nai yang for flight home.

Would like some suggestions on how we should break our 17 days up in kl.

stayed at Marriott last time (2 Years ago)and loved the restaurants on the beach (blue mist etc) but

I guess it's not the same anymore. Budget anywhere from $60-$90/n this time. Would you say 3 different locations or 2? Beach front would be good but definitely need beach bars/restaurants close. Really want to stay at ramada, not sure will be in budget though. Welcome all suggestions, totally confused! Cheers,Shane.

Why wouldn't it be. There more restaurants there to the right of the JWM after being relocated further back off the public beach which remains as wonderful as ever. We stay for nearly 5 months in one location so not really the one to advise on moving about to other places, something that's never appealed to us. If you like one place enough, its location suits and it fits your budget, why take a chance on another that may appeal to others but not to you. Khao Lak is small enough for you to take day trips to other beaches and for 17 nights perhaps stop overs in Khao Sok national Park or on Koh Kho Khao.

Best thing is to use Booking.com or other site that features most of accommodation in Khao Lak for your dates and your budget and then come back for more information on ones that you may fancy.

PS

With 31 days I hope you have your visa situation covered. You are allowed maximum of 30 days without a visa on a Visa Exempt entry on an Australian passport and airlines are obliged by Thai Immigration to confirm that you have a confirmed flight out of Thailand before that 30 days expires. Otherwise they "may" deny boarding. Airlines in UK, most of Europe, Australia, US and Canada are more rigorous in checking this than in other countries. The Thai government has tightened up on enforcing rules over Visa Exempt entries on the basis that visitors should obtain the correct visa if they are staying for more than 30 days.

Shane, you will bag a bargain at the Orchid Beach, for less than $ 50 p/n

the above mentioned restos are a short ride away, so is down town

its a really nice laid back place for at least part of your 17 stay

Leaving Australia April 4th and flying back on 4th of May. Does that just tip us over the cut off or do

we just scrape in regarding the visa? Pictures of blue mist etc look like they are located in the bush

to me and not on beach anymore hence my comment. Also,we like to try other locations as

variety is the spice life. Haven't quite found our spot as yet and sure not gonna stop looking, was after

People sharing their experiences that have already done the same thing as we would like to do but

anyway,we will figure it out and post our own experiences that might help others in the future. Thanks

Assuming you arrive in Thailand on 4th April and depart on 4th May, that is 31 days and you are 1 day over the allowed Visa Exempt period. The only way that you will find out for certain if your airline will adhere to the requirements of Thai Immigration to have Proof Of Onward Travel (POOT) within 30 days is when you check in. If they do, they could deny you checking in. That's a risk.

To avoid this risk completely you can either:

Obtain 60 day Tourist Visas from the Thai Embassy or Consulate before you leave which does not require POOT

or

Purchase the cheapest possible flight tickets out of Thailand to anywhere within the 30 day period to demonstrate POOT but not use them (hence they are called Throw Away tickets).

Regarding Blue Mist Restaurant etc., the restaurants have relocated back about 50 metres from their previous locations on the public beach. In doing so they have left the trees and some of the restaurants in the High Season set up tables under the trees nearer to the beach as well as in their restaurants which are much better structures than they were previously. This applies in other beach areas in Khao Lak where restaurants have been relocated.

Bulldogshane,

Can you change your flights so you're entering Thailand a day later, or leaving a day earlier?

Even if you're allowed on the outgoing flight, and entry to Thailand with 31-day period tickets, an extension of stay is 1900 baht pp - very expensive for one extra day.

The fine for overstaying is 500 baht/day.

However, should you 'pulled over' (or otherwise questioned by the police) between expiry of your period of stay and when you get to Immigration (Passport Control) at the airport, you are subject to being detained and deported. This scenario is highly unlikely... but it's something I don't think you want to risk with a six-year-old child.
