Sightseeing stops during transfer from Patong to Khao lak

Have booked a driver to transfer us from our hotel in patong to the leaf in khao lak. I realise it will be around a 2hr trip and just wondering if the are any places of interest on the way that we should ask the driver to stop at? We will have children with us so will probably stop for drinks etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated even if anyone can just recommend a nice place for a drink and snacks in the way! Thanks in advance

On our recent family trip, we split our stay between Karon and Khao Lak.

On the drive between Karon and khao Lak, we stopped at Bang Pae falls, the Gibbon rehabilitation project, and the mangrove walkway in nearby Bang Rong village.

It is only a little bit of a detour from the main highway between Phuket and Khao Lak. Well worth the stop for us, the Gibbons were great to see.

There is a seafood restaurant at Bang Rong village that we had heard good things about, but it was closed for renovation when we were there. The mangrove walkway goes right by the restaurant.

We ended up stopping for food and drinks at the Tesco Lotus in Thalang after our stops in the Bang Pae/Bang Rong area. Large airconditioned food court with plenty of choices.

The other worthwhile stop I'd suggest is the turtle sanctuary at Tab Lamu, which is very close to Khao Lak.

If you take the coastal road out of Patong instead of the main highway (bypass road), there are other beach stops such as Surin, Kamala, and Laem Sing beach.

Arandora on this forum is very knowledgeable about the area, perhaps he can suggest other stops of interest.

Thanks so much for your help. Gibbons and waterfall seem to be a great option. Tesco also on the list now! I have heard about a floating restaurant at bang rong pier called chum chon, food is meant to be great there. Is this the restaurant you tried to go to or was it bang pae seafood which is beside mangroves I think. Thanks again

Yes, chum chon is the place I'd heard about. It was closed when we were there.

In the end, the Tesco Lotus food court worked out well for us. If you stop there, check out the bakery section in the store. Our kids loved it.

In addition to the Turtle Sanctuary at Tab Lamu. there is the Marine Life Sanctuary down the beach road in Thai Muang which is about 90 minutes from Patong and 45minutes before Khao Lak. In addition to turtles, big and small, there are reef fish, from tiny Nemos to huge groupers, and beautiful sea anemones being raised to plant on the reefs regenerating after the Tsunami. Lampi Waterfall is about 15 minutes on the right up the highway from there.
