Questions about restaurants/bars/Boatyard

Hi - very excited to finally be going back to Khao Lak. We had 4 days there in 2007 when we backpacked for a couple of weeks. We fly on Saturday morning and I can't wait.

At that time we stayed at the Similana Resort (which is no longer there I believe). There was a fantastic little beach restaurant next to it - White Sands I think? - is that still there?

Also, from reading descriptions, am I right in thinking that the Boatyard restaurant is in between where the Similana used to be and the Sarojin?

We are staying at La Flora resort this time - are there any restaurants/bars people would recommend? And do any of the bars show football of an evening?

Finally, we have used mopeds on Koh Lanta numerous times. Would you say it is safe to use them in Khao Lak (for instance if we wanted to moped from La Flora up to where Similana used to be) - or is it easy enough to get a taxi or songthaew?

Thanks for any advice.

There are three restaurants all with bungalows and too many loungers on the beach to the left of the former Similana site on White Sand Beach. The Boatyard is past White Sand Beach, then about 600 metres past the Sarojin and Kantary Resorts. See pics of Pak Weeb Beach from Cape Pakarang to just past the Similana for this High Season so far at https:/…

There are dozens of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance of La Flora both on or overlooking the beach or on the roads leading up to the highway where there are even more. Bang Niang has the widest variety of cuisines in Khao Lak in addition, of course, to Thai both local and regional.

Thai local and seafood, try Na Suang, Siam, Mali. Lucky, Sawasdee, Loma, Rabeang and Rabeang on the Beach.

Thai regional try Khao Niau (Isan), Dao Thong (Chiang Rai), Hill Tribes (Chiang Mai)

Japanese - Enzo, Mexican - Rusty Pelican, German - Bavaria House, Italian - IL Bello and Pinocchio's.

See map at http://www.t3x.de/khaolak/BangNiangKarte.htm

The Bam Corner cocktail Bar (opposite Pinocchio's), Smile Cocktail Bar and Gecko Bar all show live football.

And that's before you go down the road into Bang La On, the main township where there are even more, including Smile, Orchid Café, Orchid Restaurant, Tiffy's, Khao Lak Seafood, Mojo, Busabba, Naam, D-Dee;s Café. Everyday, Walkers Inn (which also has best selection of sports coverage in Khao Lak)

Safe to use mopeds in Khao Lak? Given that 80% of fatalities on the road every year in Thailand involve scooters (they are not mopeds, they are more highly powered) and Khao Lak has its share because of the high speed highway running through it, personally I don't regard it as "safe." In any event to drive a scooter legally in Thailand and to be covered by your own insurance (as none of the scooters include insurance) you need to be qualified to do so in your own country and in the case of an accident involving police prove it, preferably to avoid confusion with an International Driving Permit.

It is easy to get either a taxi or song thaew. These are typical rates to various places from Bang Niang walagata.com/w/…Taxi_Prices_2012-13.jpg

That's really helpful - thanks Arandora. Especially the maps.

Bang La On - would that be referred to as Khao Lak on the taxi price list?

Looking forward to non stop Thai food for the next 2 weeks.

Fozzy

Yes Bang La On is the official town name but often referred to as Khao Lak or Khao Lak Town or even rather optimistically City.
