Just a quick question re smoking. Coming from Europe we are used to no smoking in both bars and restaurants - what is the situation in Thailand?
In theory the same. No smoking inside restaurants and bars, smoke outside. In practice some smokers ignore this and some establishments don't enforce it for fear of losing custom. You will see no smoking signs inside a restaurant but ash trays placed on tables and smokers smoking under the signs. Complaining to the smoker gets better results but perhaps nasty looks and comments than to the Thai owner who generally just shrugs. They don't like enforcement or confrontation! We persuaded one of uour friends to get her staff to point out the No Smoking signs to offending customers and remove the ashtrays as she ran a busy restaurant and probably ran a greater risk of losing non-smoker returning customers than smokers. She did andit is now smoke free and just as busy. Many restaurants are open sided which gives the excuse of it not being inside.
