You will want to stay in (or very close to) either: Bang La On or, ten minutes north in Bang Niang.

Bang La On is slightly larger with more restaurants (and shops); however, Bang Niang has restaurants serving a greater variety of cuisines... and a few more bars.

There is no 'wild' night life in either.

As Cruisemonkey says you would probably be best staying in Bang La On.

We stayed in the Bhandari Hotel and loved it. Not on the beach but just across a quiet little road from it.

Looking at maps there is a road from bang niang beach to petchkasem road with bars ,restaurants etc

it has mukadara resort at bottom of road , this looks like a road with some places to eat and drink

is this the place to be near

The road you are describing is Bang Niang Beach Road where most restaurants and bars are located with more along the beach front and up on the highway (Petchkasem Road). Both areas shown on the map. Beachfront hotels are 4* Ramada, 4* La Flora, 4* Mukdara, all adjacent to each other on the widest stretch of Bang Niang Beach. Then on the other side of the beach road, 3* Chong Fah Resort with 3* Fanari Courtyard directly back from it across the beach access road, 3* Ayara Villas, 3* Shambala. 4* Monochrome in the centre of Bang Niang is also an option.

"there seems to be a big gap between k lak riverside and spa hotel and k lak sands ?" - the Riverside is just back from the southern end of BANG NIANG Beach, the Sands is about 2km across the creek half way along NANG THONG Beach.

"is there any road with bars on in nathong similar to the one in niang (nathong rd ?)" - NANG THONG Beach is about 10 minutes down the Nang Thong Beach Road, which has restaurants, bars and shops on it; from the centre of BANG LA ON the main township of Khao Lak which has most restaurants, bars and shops in Khao Lak. The Sands is located at the northern end of Bang La On. Highway 4 (Petchkasem Road) runs through all of Khao Lak with mountains and hills on one side and the coast and ocean on the other. The two main townships are Bang La On and Bang Niang which are about 10 minutes apart by road.

"how far is a walk from nathong rd to the bars on bang niang beach rd ( road near Mukdara resort)" - from the centre of Bang La On (Nang Thong Supermarket where Nang Thong Beach Road starts down to the beach) to the top of Bang Niang Beach Road which leads down to Bang Niang Beach (at the side of the Mukdara) is a very hot 30-45 minute walk along the very busy highway. From the top of the beach road it is about 1km down to the beach.

we stayed at Chong Fah and it was excellent (3 weeks ago). Right on beach and able to walk to many different restaurants etc. There are also some shops close by but if you want the main village it is a few mins in a taxi.
