Khao Lak V Nai Yang

We stayed at Dewa in Nai Yang last Nov & have booked to go back in Jan. However with the tearing down of restaurants etc we are a bit wary of going back as obv it won't be the same.

My question is how does Khao Lak compare to Nai Yang? Is it much busier? Didn't like Patong when we drove through it. Are there beach restaurants, sunbeds & more importantly shade on the beach. Have been looking at Sensimar Khaolak Resort. How safe is swimming in the sea in Jan/Feb? Many thanks

Nai Yang is one beach, stretching perhaps 1 km or so from the Dewa to the Indigo Pearl. Khao Lak has 8 beach areas stretching about 25km along the Andaman Coast. Each beach is different in character, some more remote than others, some with more resorts with restaurants overlooking or back from the beach and on the surrounding roads up to and on the highway that runs through Khao Lak. However, Khao Lak is not remotely like Patong, is very much smaller, less commercialised and more laid back. Local restaurants with sun bed hire that were on he public beach like all others on Phuket and elsewhere in Thailand have been or will be subject to removal. However, there are restaurants back from the beach with loungers provided for those who dine there and the beaches are lined with trees for natural shade.

Resorts direct beachfront like the Adult Only Sensimar have sun bathing areas with loungers and umbrellas on their land at the edge of the beach. The Sensimar is located right at the beginning of Bang La on the main township of Khao Lak with its many restaurants, bars and shops within easy walking distance. The sea is fine for swimming in Jan/Feb.

Thank you for your very comprehensive reply. Sensimar was just one of many hotlels I looked at & liked at as it was beachfront. Wasn't particularily looking for adult only, but might be quite a nice break as we look after our 2 year old twin granddaughters one a week!
