Khao Lak or Koh Samui,

hi, hubby & i are planning 6 nights in either Khao Lak or Koh Samui in april 2015 and after suggestions of where is the best place to stay, We have never been to Thailand before so unsure exactly where to stay, we are in our early 30's and want to relax by the pool, have a few drinks , nice dinner, and do some exploring. (Phuket does not interest us )

Hi

Both Samui and khao lak is rather different. Khao lak so mainland whereas koh Samui ( koh, ko in Thai mean island) is small island. Khao lak offers more things and easy access both mainland and water base activity. Samui as its small island there for offers less things/activity on land then Khao lak.

Khao lak it easy and cheaper to get to, Samui proved to be more expensive to get to if fly direct. That being said you can get to Samui cheaply but involved longer time ( full day from BKK ) which in your case is not sensible to do this way as you have only short time.

Best to read FAQs on both forums and decides which suit you best. Once decides then ask for help of place to stay.

So does Phuket( you have to fly to Phuket airport then car transfers to Khao lak ) The thing is Phuket have more airlines fly to and from Bangkok and neighboring country both full service and low cost airlines. Koh Samui airport own by Bangkok airways, and only two airlines fly direct ( from Bangkok ) to island Thai airways (2 flights) and Bangkok airways ( 12 flights daily). Hence the price for flying direct to the island is quite expensive.

Just saying !

I agree with my good friend Sweetpea. Transfer time shouldn't be the main factor. It is which destination appeals to you most from the information you can get in each forum or elsewhere.

Khao Lak has over 25km of glorious beaches, accommodation to suit all budgets and restaurants with various cuisines as well, of course, as Thai to suit all tastes. Have a look at photos of all the beaches taken between November last year and April this year at tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k… and of the various tours and things to do in and around Khao Lak at tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k…

If you want more information about accommodation it would be very helpful if you said what your budget is to get suggestions to match it.

If you have a look at Booking.com for accommodation in Khao Lak for your dates it lists nearly all there is at very competitive prices. Any that appeals to you, just ask.

Bear in mind that Easter is right at the beginning of April 2015 and is followed on 13th by Songkran, the Thai New Year, both of which will make that period very popular in both Khao Lak and Koh Samui.

5. Re: Khao Lak or Koh Samui,

Thanks for all the input... Our budget is around $1000-1500. I don't want to waste a day traveling to get to a specific location , as we have a very early flight to turkey. I have had a looked on booking.com and found a few really nice hotels including apsara, la flora and the sands.

The 3/4* Apsara is located on the beautiful, albeit remote, Pakarang Beach with only a handful of beach restaurants and no shops nearby. Otherwise you are 20-25 minutes north of the main towns of Bang Niang and Bang La On where most restaurants, bars and shops are to be found. Transfer time to Phuket Airport about 90 minutes.

The 4* La Flora is located direct beachfront on Bang Niang Beach with restaurants, bars and shops in all directions as well as the big 3 afternoons a week Bang Niang market.

The 4* Sands Resort is beachfront on Nang Thong Beach with access on the highway at the top end of Bang La On so, again, within easy reach of many restaurants, bars and shops.

La Flora and Sands about 70- 75 minutes from Phuket Airport.

Also have a look at the Adult Only 4* Sensimar at the southern end of Bang La On, just over an hour to the airport and also the Bhandari and Oriental Resorts nearby.

good morning

We are in our late 30's and found Khao Lak a little boring [ sorry Khao Lak lovers } but if you do deice to go there it's worth seeing to navy boat washed up inland and Little sandy white beach ,And the night market as well, Night life a little to quite for our liking anyway , We rather Samui more dinning options more day trips and a bit more night life , Island tours ect , And some nice Beaches as well

Good luck with what ever you choose I'm sure you will love both ,

Hi

We were in Khao Lak in april this year (around Songkran!) and would agree that there was not an obvious amount of "nightlife". There were plenty of restuarants - but most had emptied and were closing by 10 pm .

We were with kids so were not looking for clubs or late night bars - so it maybe that it was just off our radar.

Beaches were lovely though and we had a great time there!

I hope those looking for nightlife have a look at the Top Questions FAQ "What Evening Entertainment is there in Khao Lak?" Khao Lak is many things to many people, Patong or Chaweng or even Ao Nang it ain't! Which in itself is why so many return.
