Which islands with kids - Similan/Surin or Koh Tachai?

Hi we are coming to Khao Lak in late December and would like to explore some of the islands.

We have 2 kids ages 9 & 11.

Just wondering which islands/tours would be best suitable for the kids please?

Thanks :)

The Similans and Koh Tachai have same transfer times from and to your resort in Khao Lak via the pier in Tab Lamu about 20 minutes away. Add an hour each way on top of that for the Surins.

Koh Tachai has the advantages that it is smaller and, therefore, less busy but sadly they have relaxed controls over the number of boats visiting there daily, and you can snorkel from the beautiful powder like beach in the crystal clear water as well as from the boat and the kids (and you) can explore the shoreline and look for the huge chicken crabs which nest near the roots of the trees. Tours to there are a bit more expensive (Fantastic Similans is particularly recommended) but IMO are worth it.

Thanks Arandora!

Tachai sounds beautiful, just not sure if would prefer the option of visiting multiple island stops like on the Similans tours in order to see and do more in the day....

Looking at Phi Phi also from Phuket when we are staying there after our stay in Khao Lak......can only afford to do one trip so trying to choose the most suited...

Thanks for your thoughts :)

Bear in mind that whilst you do stop at different islands on the Similan Islands tour it is essentially a snorkelling tour with the longest stop being on one island for lunch and another for sightseeing. Other stops are for snorkelling from the boat. The Khao Lak Land Discovery gives as good a description of your three destinations as any so you can compare which suits your family best then you can decide where to take it from http://www.khaolaklanddiscovery.com/#

Thanks Alan :) I think Tachai might be best option here, but still undecided - luckily still plenty of time to decide!!

We did Tachai earlier this year with our five year old son.

We loved it, the island is beautiful. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the company we went with, Andaman something or other. They looked after us all amazingly well especially our son.

Can't give a comparative opinion as we haven't been to the other islands, but definitely recommend Tachai.

Have a great trip, whatever you decide.

They are quite different. Koh Tachai is actually part of the Similan Islands group and comes under the Similan National Park Authority. It is just one small island, given by some the nickname of "The Maldives of Thailand" because of its brilliant white talcum powder like sand, crystal clear water, small in-shore reefs so that you can snorkel from the beach as well as from the boat and even fruit bats in the trees. Having been to both I would agree that the nickname is well deserved. We were lucky that we went on one of the early Tachai tours when the NP authority limited the number of boats to 3 or 4 a day. They didn't want the excessive number arriving at the Similans but, sadly, that has been relaxed somewhat or perhaps ignored! It is still a wonderfully beautiful destination though.
