Advice on where to visit in Ko Samui compared to Khao Lak

We are planning our holiday to Thailand for next January and will return to Khao Lak La Flora Hotel for the fourth time - paradise on Earth in our view! We also would like to go to Koh Samui for a few days as this is an area we have not visited and we have always tried to visit a different part of Thailand during our trips but always returning to KL of course! We love the beach, the close proximity of restaurants and the laid back atmosphere/vibe of La Flora and Khao Lak - any ideas from those of you who also know Koh Samui on a similar area/hotel to stay when there?

Both are different destinations in their own right. We enjoyed Chaweng Noi but not as much as Khao Lak - and that was 1996!

Hi

Similar price to La Flora

Sala Samui in cheongmon beach

Akyra chura in north chaweng beach

Anatara lawana in north chaweng beach

Poppies in south chaweng beach

Vana belle in chaweng noi beach

The new star in chaweng noi beach

The imperial Samui beach in chaweng noi beach

Check them out. These should fit in with your requirements.

I can tell you where NOT to go on Koh Samui -

Like you, I'm a Khao Lak fan and decided to visit (first time) Koh Samui last Jan./Feb. I picked the Lamai Beach area figuring it would more peaceful than Chaweng. Even though my hotel was a 10-min. walk up from the beach, I was overwhelmed by the noise and 'insanity'!

The 'thump, thump' of music from the girlie bars lasted until 6:00 AM, and construction noise (grinders, chain saws, cement trucks) started at 5:00 AM. There seems to be a contest to see who:

- has the loudest motorcycle on the island,

- can drive the drunkest/fastest,

- and which Muai Thai boxing truck can blast out the loudest ads.

Never again!

I loved Koh Samui at Centara Grand south Chaweng. I would happily go back there but of course love Khao Lak too having stayed at La Flora 3 times.

Maybe we should consider visiting Krabi as an alternative - any experiences of this area compared to La Flora at Khao Lak would be appeciated.

The limestone scenery both on land and in the sea is absolutely stunning as are some of the beaches on the small off-shore islands but I don't think the mainland beaches are as nice as Khao Lak's and the main area of Ao Nang is bigger and more commercialised than either Bang La On or Bang Niang. It is makes for a popular two centre holiday though or, for us, various day tours.

Hi!

I'm just wading in to give my tuppence worth! I've been to Samui (years ago!) and wasn't a huge fan even then as u thought it was a bit too much commercialised and 'could be anywhere' in the sun. However I really liked Koh Tao which is a speedboat ride from Samui and had some stunning parts to see.

However as you are looking to go somewhere for a couple of days while in Khao Lak I would suggest Khao Lanta. It has very many similarities to Khao Lak but the journey there- if u left Khao lak you could go to Phuket pier & get ferry to Phi phi & then lanta- is a very lovely journey to make. I've been to Ao Nang and to be honest was ok but to be honest not a place that I loved. Yes the limestone cliffs everywhere is lovely but the place itself felt quite small and not like real Thailand to me.

If it's only a couple of days out of your Khao Lak holiday I wouldn't say a flight to/ from Samui is worth it. Khao Tao maybe but I would set aside maybe 4 days as getting there from Samui would be at least 1/2 day from landing and same getting back to airport.

Just my opinion in the places I've seen!

Where to stay in Samui....depends on what you want? Nightlife, bars, noise then it's Chaweng, peace quiet beach and all day sunshine Mae Nam is lovely and close to Fishermans Village for Friday Walking Street, Lamai is quite small and very busy but has bars restaurants and the best Thai massage in Thailand...We are frequent travellers to Samui and love it there, our plan to visit over Xmas and New Year is still on course as the Thai people will work with and around any curfews and no doubt double their welcome and service to please the tourists that do travel. I hope it they are all safe and the situation ends positively very soon.
