General Advice - Khao Lak / La Flora Resort

We are due to visit Khao Lak from end of May and have already found this forum very, very useful. Now that our trip is fast approaching, we would like specific feedback/advice in relation to:

1. What is the current weather like; do you have any advice for things to do in Khao Lak when it is wet??

2. We will be staying at the La Flora Resort and Spa.

Are there any supermarkets located nearby? Would you advise stocking up on some alcohol in the supermarkets or in the airport on landing? How much can we expect to pay should we decide to dine in at the hotel? Can you recommend any nice restaurants close by? We like to eat a variety of different foods e.g. Mexican, Italian, Thai and not necessarily the same food every night. Has anyone had experience of using the Spa; I like the idea of maybe having a treatment on a wet afternoon??

3. We like the idea of doing a couple of trips and would welcome any reviews/feedback from others that have done the same:

- James Bond Island and sea cave canoe

- Three temple tour

- Elephant trekking and waterfall

- Khao Sok National Park

Generally I don’t travel particularly well on water; due to the time of year we are visiting, I am likely to experience travel sickness when doing for example the James Bond Island trip?

Are there any other must do experiences in Khao Lak, we don't want to miss out on an opportunity as we don't usually visit the same place twice!

4. What types of souvenirs can we expect to find in the markets etc; we are not really interested in fake items, but like the idea of authentic things for the home as well as maybe a nice photo album to store the photo snaps which we look back on in year to come!!

I think that is all for now; thanking you in anticipation!!

1. Current weather - see tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k… This though is no guide as to what it will be like at the end of May.It is Wet Season and the weather is unpredictable.

2. See latest map of Bang Niang at walagata.com/w/…Bang_Niang_October_2013.jpg There is a small shop or two on the way from the La Flora to the beach road and then a couple of mini-marts to the left and right of the junction and a 711 to the right at the junction of the highway. However, the biggest supermarket, the Nang Thong Supermarket, and a couple of others which are better for alcohol and no more expensive than at the airport where the Duty Free on landing is very small in Bang La On about 10 minutes down the highway.

For restaurants there is the Rabeang (Thai) and Amici (expensive but excellent Italian) on the road from the Flora then you have a wide range if you turn right at the junction, including Siam and Mali (Thai), Rusty Pelican (Mexican), Bavaria House (German/Thai), Enzo (Japanese), then further up Lucky Seafood, Lona Seafood, Sawasdee (great or duck), Khao Niau (Isan), across the highway Dao Thong (Chiang Rai based) then to the right Hill Tribes (Chiang Mai) and lots more down in Bang La On including Smile, Tiffy's. Orchid Café, Busabba, Mojo and Everyday.

3. You can book trips to Phang Nga Bay (home of James Bond Island and sea canoes) and the other tours you mention at various tour desks in Bang Niang and Bang La On and/or through operators like Green Andaman Travel at http://www.greenandamantravel.com/ and Khao Lak Land Discovery at www.khaolaklanddiscovery.com/eng/index.php…

See pics of popular tours at tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k… but bear in mind that the Similan Islands, Surin Islands and Koh Tachai will be closed. Plenty of info in the FAQs on the right for other things to do.

4. Souvenirs in the shops and the three afternoons a week Bang Niang Market are mainly just touristy ones with some local more authentic items.

Hope this helps - for now. ;-)
