If you are looking for another version of Patong or Koh Samui, then no.

"what's there to do ,what should I expect?"

25km of glorious beaches, accommodation to suit all budgets, restaurants to suit all tastes (sorry only 1 McDonalds if you are looking for western commercialised places to eat), main centre for tours to Similan and Surin Islands and Koh Tachi, one hour north to Khao Sok National Park, one hour south to Phang Nga Bay, 2 hours to Krabi.

Look here for pics of beaches from late last November to end of March tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k70…

and here for pics of popular tours/places to visit tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k70…

As previously advised plenty of information in the Top Questions on the right and via the link Things to Do on the green menu bar at the top.

We recently went to khao Lak for the first time as we have previously only been to Patong. We booked 3 nights in Patong and 5 in Khao Lak to get the best of both worlds. Arriving in Khao Lak was a breath of fresh air after being in Patong. I actually don't think we'd bother with Patong anymore as the same shopping is available at Khao Lak without all the hassling and people yelling out at you. But I'd suggest if you're in doubt split the trip and do both like we did. It was about a 2 hour car trip from Patong to Khao Lak. It was fun to enjoy the craziness of Patong and then go and chill out in Khao Lak. Khao Lak is a lot quieter than Patong but there are still plenty of restaurants and shops around. We stayed at Nang Thong Bay Resort which was walking distance to plenty of shops and a 5 min taxi to the local market. I'd suggest if you like to be in the middle of things, then stay around this area.

Happy holiday planning!

If you like Phuket and Koh Samui then Khao Lak might be too quiet for you so I would do as JOH99 suggests and split it up.

What are YOUR reasons for splitting up betweeen Khao Lak and Patong? The OP is looking for comparisons with Patong not Phuket.

Khao Lak is the most unlike Patong place you could find that near Phuket! It is nothing like.

Patong, or Chaweng on Samui, are busy places. Khao Lak is not. If you are after busy.

Sadly most folks confuse Patong as Phuket. Phuket is a large island, with Patong being only one bay!

I have booked Nang Thong Bay Resort for a stay next month, were you happy with your choice of accommodation and do you have any any tips? Sounds like vicinity to shops and beach are what I am after.

Jem

Who are you asking your question of? I don't think the OP (Original Poster) has booked his accommodation or decided to stay in Khao Lak for how long or at all yet? There is plenty of information from previous guests at NTBR if you put that in the Search box. If you have other questions you would get more answers by starting a new topic. :-)
