Mai Khao Lak location -is it close to local restaurants etc?

Hi everyone

we're travelling to KL on Sunday as a family of 4 - kids 9 & 7. Staying at Mai & would love advice on the following-

1 are local restaurants close to the Mai & which do you recommend? We love all kids of food & kids are adventurous thankfully.

2 Are the prices similar to Karon restaurants? Eg. 2 beers 2 softdrinks, 2 entrees & 4 mains around 1200 to 1500

3 Which markets or shopping areas do you recommend?

4 What tailor do you recommend? Just want some tailored shirts with contrasting lined cuffs & inside the collar - what is a fair price for a shirt?

You are lucky to be arriving before the end of April as most of the row of about restaurants adjacent to the Mai will close for the wet season. At the moment although quiet all are open and will be busier as Songkran and Easter approach.

As well as these restaurants where the Karon costs you quote are pretty comparable if not a bit more expensive, the Mai caters well for its guests with very reasonably priced food and drink at both lunch and dinner.

Our favourites are Elicious, Ma Ma Lek's, be Friend and Sun, Sand & Beach.

No shops in immediate vicinity. Main shopping area is Bang La On 20 minutes away by taxi/shuttle and big 3 afternoons a week market in Bang Niang opposite the Police Boat.

Hi we arrive on Tuesday at Mai Khao Lak, we stayed at Mai last year and the beach restaurants are excellent, Arandora has recommended Elicious which we did not try last year so will definitely be trying! Ma Mas was excellent for food. We only ate once at the Mai pool restaurant and it was dreadful, the buffet nights look good at the hotel, I have read good and bad reports on these so we did not try. To be honest we felt no need to eat in hotel kids prefer the beach life.

We travelled into town for supplies, you can grab a taxi near the beach they will take you in rather than go upto reception! There was a supermarket at the end of the road which runs from the restaurants to the main road. Have a safe trip and might see you on the beach :-)

The Mai now has a beach restaurant/buffet and dining area set out on the beach.

Last year the Mai had the beach Buffett set up in the evenings for first few days we were there and then it was mass exodus of the Scandinavians the staff packed everything up including the beach cocktail bar, we were just left rattling around for the last week, we had hit low season and I think the hotel maybe more popular this year, I personally enjoyed having so much space to ourselves it was magic!
