Chinese New Year

Today is Chinese New Year and quite a few locals have mentioned it over past few days.

Sat here by the pool in Lah Own at 10:15 am there are fire works being let off regularly already.

Does anyone know of any fire work displays or other celebrations that might be taking place tonight in Bang la On or Biang Niang ? Have tried asking staff here but their English is not brilliant to be honest and just keep saying "Yes today Chinese New Year". My Thai is awful and is limited to Hello and Thank you.

Just jumped out of my sun bed as a clatter of unannounced explosions (fireworks) were let off in gardens of Lah Own !!!!

Today is Chinese New Year's Eve. Tomorrow is start of Chinese New Year. Some resorts have special gala dinners on either day. The fireworks you have heard are part of the Thanksgiving ceremonies by Thai Chinese families. Sky fireworks probably tonight or tomorrow night or both.
