Khao Lak or Kata Beach

We are two families planning to travel to Thailand for the first time in July-Aug 2014. First we are going to Krabi for a wedding, but we are planning to take the last week around Phuket, since our flight home will be from Phuket airport.

We booket hotel in Khao Lak (Khao Lak Paradise Resort), but a friend of mine who had been in Thailand several times told me that Khao Lak will be too boring in the low season, and he recommended Kata Beach. Therefore I ask you experienced travellers - what to choose??

As mentioned we are two families, our children are very varied in age: 1,5, 9, 10, 12 og 15 years. Is Khao Lak Paradice resort a good choice - near the restaurants/city center? We are interested to live in walking distance to beach and restaurants And we are also not interested to be at the beach and hotel all the time - we are ready for excursions. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I think from what you've said that Kata would be a better choice especially as you're going in the rainy season and with kids as there's more to do in Phuket.

Sounds to me like Kata might well be your best choice if you are looking for things to do as well as just beach.

The Paradise is an excellent Thai style resort on the beautiful Sunset Beach where unlike Kata Beach loungers are not allowed on the beach so you can enjoy its natural beauty in full. It is an easy walk downhill into the main township of Bang La On where most restaurants, bars and shops remain open. You can book excursions north to Khao Sok National Park or south to Phang Nga Bay whilst there are local trips to the Turtle Sanctuary nearby as well as bamboo rafting. Whilst Kata may be a bit busier and is more commercialised than Khao Lak I'm not sure that there are is much more nearby to do for the kids. From the Paradise to Phuket Airport is about an hour about the same as from Kata.
