Sands Vs Ramada

Hi guys, we are looking at coming to Khaolak in August.

We are a family of 4 with a 3 and 5 year old.

We are looking for somewhere with restaurants within walking distance for little legs as well as good grounds, swimming pools and some shade.

Both hotels look to fit the bill but was hoping that someone could offer some advice or even a better option.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you are able to give.

Not sure about the Sands but the Ramada is a good sized resort with a big feature pool. Rooms are nice and it is beachfront. There is a nice little beach restaurant just a short walk if you turn left out of the resort, and there are also some local little restaurants inland, within walking distance of the Ramada. For the fancier restaurants you'd probably be better off going to the main highway area from what I can remember.

My suggestion would be to check google maps for convenience factors and then make a decision based on price vs. tripadvisor reviews of each property.

The Ramada is direct beachfront on Bang Niang Beach, the Sands direct beachfront on Nang Thong Beach which are adjacent beaches separated by a creek which runs deep when the tide is in. Have a look at the Top Question Maps links on the right for the latest maps of the various areas in Khao Lak).

In High Season both resorts enjoy beach restaurants within easy walking distance especially the ones over the creek on Nang Thong Beach. However, August is the middle of the Wet Season (but still "usually" lots of sun) and the heavy seas encroach on the beaches forcing them to close. Bang Niang has plenty of restaurants inland on the roads upto and on the highway, some of which close too because it is quieter off season although the Ramada is still popular because of its Low Season rates.

The Sands though has the advantage that its main entrance is on the highway at the top end of Bang La On, the main township of Khao Lak with most restaurants, bars and shops, more of which stay open in Low Season. Bang Niang hosts the three times a week market (Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays) but that is less than 10 minutes up the road from Bang La On anyway.

I don't think you would be disappointed with either resort but perhaps the Sands might have the edge because of its children's facilities although it is visually the least attractive of the two.

Hope this helps.
