May- khao lak or kata

We arrive to Phuket airport on the 3rd may 2014. We are looking to stay at khao lak but seen that a Lot of things close in May. Would we be better to give khao lak a miss and head to kata beach instead. We have been to both places before but it was high season. We prefer khao lak but don't want to miss out on the shops and restaurants that are open in the high season.

Regards.

Restaurants and shops generally stay open in May as the season doesn't just change overnight. Beach restaurants will depend on beach conditions. It is quieter though but you enjoy accommodation rates and often half or less than just a week or so earlier.

Thanks arandora I knew you would have the knowledge for this topic. We are looking to stay at the sands as we will have our 15 month old daughter with us and we would like to be close to everything.

In addition to being close to the restaurants on the beach, the main entrance on the highway is at the top end of Bang La On, the main township of Khao Lak where most restaurants, bars and shops are located. So great location for both beach and town.

Hi Ausiam

We did both Khao Lak and Kata last May. There was plenty still open, particularly around the Sands. You have Smile, The Orchid Cafe, Tiffy's and O'Rendezvous right outside the driveway to the Sands to name a few. When we went back in October there were a few new shops open nearby as well and with The Leaf now also open there will probably be more popping up. Last May some of the market stalls just south of Nang Thong Supermarket were closed, but the Markets at Bang Niang were busy.

Kata was definately busier, weather was very similar in both locations

It would be Khao Lak for us.

Thank you tezzat. That's a great help. Especially as you were at the two destinations last year. We are going to go with khao lak as the sands looks like a great spot for our daughter as well. Thanks everyone for your help.
