Khao Lak or Krabi? (flights to Krabi already booked)

Hi,

I booked flights to Krabi from Singapore with the intention of going to Ao Nang for five nights. I have hotel accommodation booked there (not paid for yet) and will be doing some diving.

I'm going at the beginning of Jan which I know is peak season - so lots of people - and am beginning to wonder if Khao Lak is a good alternative? I'm not someone who wants lots of nightlife or shops, I'm more into wandering around, nature, beaches, diving... and I really don't want to surrounded by hordes of people! Still want to be somewhere where I can walk to restaurants, dive shops, etc, though and be able to organise days out.

Will it be as busy in Khao Lak at this time of year as Ao Nang?

I'm also wondering how to get to Khao Lak cheaply. I've read the FAQs - does anyone know of a shared minibus deal from Krabi airport? Was going to change my flights to Phuket but I'm flying with Tiger and the cost of changes equals buying a whole new ticket! I'm reluctant to pay for a private shuttle as I'm travelling alone and on a budget. I'll have 20K of bags with me so not keen on getting a public bus unless there's no other alternative!

Anyone with any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Lorraine

Hi Lorraine

It's getting busier at the moment here in Khao Lak but even in January, "busy" is a relative term. Plenty of people about but Khao Lak is not like Krabi and not as buy as Ao Nang, where we are going for a ride around today.

Boss of Cheaper than Hotel Taxis on cheaper_khaolak@ymail.com is cheapest and best transfer from and to Krabi. Don't know about a shared mini-bus.

For accommodation I understand that occupancy in the medium to large hotels is down a bit with knock on effects of the Bangkok protests so I would have a look on Booking.com (for instance) for your dates and budget and see what availability is. Accommodation on Nang Thong Beach and Bang Niang Beach mets your criteria and plenty of dive centres around. If you come up with anything ask again for more information.

Thanks Arandora! I'm still thinking about what to do. It's the cost of the transfer from the airport that's mainly holding me back I think, but I'll email Boss and ask about his prices.

We had a wonderful day in Krabi revisiting for the first time since 1999 our stay there. So we did the 4 Island + Raillay Beach by longtail boat tour which was great (except at times we thought we were in Russia not Thailand!) then drove to Ao Nang to see if the stories of it being a mini Patong were true. Sadly, they were! There is no comparison at all between the IMO over commercialised Ao Nang and Khao Lak. Others of course will have their own views.

Having said that there is no denying the stunning scenery of Krabi which makes a great two centre holiday. For short term you can see the spectacular le stone formations in Phang Nga Bay, just an hour from Khao Lak.

In terms of transfers to Khao Lak from Krabi airport you really need to put that cost in the context of the overall cost and enjoyment of your holiday.

We did a mini bus transfer from Koh lanta to Khao Lak via Krabi in August. From memory it cost 600 baht each.

I think you could organise this on the ground when you land at Krabi airport with one of the tour desks. The bus will most likely be full, but we found it O.K.

Check the Koh lanta or Krabi forum. The transfer question is often asked on these forums and I'm sure you will find up to date information.

We transferred Ao Nang To Khao Lak (Nang Thong Beach) with Boss in October, 2500 baht for 4 adults in an SUV.

Thanks tezzat, I've been quoted the same price... Hoping to get a shared minvan now as it'll be a lot cheaper, just tracking down how to organise it...

There is/was one minivan leaving Krabi around midday. And somebody mentioned a new company on the route with 2 or 3 more departures to Khao Lak. If your flight arrives early you should be able to catch one of them. You might have to hang around waiting for a while.

If your arriving a bit later in the afternoon I would head straight for Krabi Bus station and catch any coach bus heading towards Phuket. Then change for a coach bus heading north via Khao Lak at Kok Kloy. Cheapest at 2-300 thb if that`s what your after.

But it you do want to dive, staying around Krabi area might be better.

Thanks Jamie WHk. I'm arriving mid afternoon... Am now thinking I'll stay a night or two in Krabi, have a quick look around and then catch a minibus to Khao Lak for the remaining few days... My return flight from Krabi goes mid afternoon too so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. So thanks for the info!
