Also meant to add we are going early November if this makes a difference. Thanks
I think if you found Patong too crazy then Khao Lak will suit you just fine. This has been our experience anyway, Patong is too over the top! KL is quite compact and easy to walk around. Arandora could advise on some good resorts to stay that would suit your needs. Krabi is quite stunning but the nicest resorts do tend to be isolated so the option would be stay in Ao Nang to be near restaurants, shopping etc. However we haven't really come across any places in Ao Nang that we really really like. Just my opinion.
We are similar age group and if you want to chill, Khao Lak is your destination.
We've done Ao Nang 3 times and have no desire to return, we've done Khao Lak 3 times since last March and want to return again and again, every six months if possible.
Scoopon currently have a great deal at The Sands at Nang Thong Beach Khao Lak and and Cudo have a great deal for the Ramada at Bang Niang both well under your budget.

Is Khao Lak too busy? Even at its busiest Khao Lak doesn't appear to be so. With over 25km of great beaches with loungers set bak not lined up like sardines there is plenty of room for everyone. Bang la on, the main town tends to get busy in the evening as that is where most restaurants, bars and shops are to be found but in November it will not be that busy, just right!
You've had some good recommendations for accommodation within your budget that are near to town. If you want to be on a more secluded beach with beach restaylurants nearby have a look at Le Meridien and Beyond Resort which is Adult Only as is the Kantary and the Sensimar.
Thanks everyone. Will do some research
