Snorkeling sites in September?

We have booked for a few days getaway in Khao Lak in mid September. After reading more from the forums become knowing that September is not a good season for snorkeling there as Similian islands and Surin islands will be closed. Wonder if there are other sites opened and good for snorkeling. I plan to rent a car and prefer to stay in relatively quieter resort, would it be a bad idea to stay too far away from Tap Lamu Pier.

The Similan and Surin Islands and Koh Tachai which are the main snorkelling destinations accessed from Khao Lak (Similans and Koh Tachai from Tab Lamu, Surins from Kuraburi) are all closed until the end of September. No other options on the Khao Lak coastline. There options from Phuket. Since Tab Lamu is out and not really any accommodation there anyway, you have the rest of Khao Lak to consider. Phuket Sail Tours are highly recommended for their tours which include snorkelling. If you have a hire car you can do your own transfers to their departure pier. See http://phuketsailtours.com/

Thank you, Arandora! But it is quite expensive and a distance to drive and then take a boat. What would you recommend if I can change the base from Khao Lak to somewhere else in order to do more snorkeling. We have been Phi Phi Island and enjoyed. Would there be anything similar in another location.

September is not a good month for weather and therefore beach and ocean conditions anywhere in Thailand so wherever you go you are not guaranteed god conditions for snorkelling. I'm not familiar enough with Gulf of Thailand destinations to advise whether they may offer more opportunities. A question on the Phuket and Koh Samui forums may produce more information.
