Khao Lak in July/August for 17 nights with 2 children.

Having toured around most of Thailand, i'm keen to get off the busy tourist route hence my decision to take the family to Khao Lak for 17 nights. We'll be staying at the JW Marriott and as a family we're happiest playing in the sea/pool or lazing around. Now i'd like to know is 17 nights too long?

Also are there plenty of restaurants to try (don't want to be confined to the hotel), are bicycles easy to hire? Is Khao Lak hilly or flat? Is it easy to arrange sea fishing? If we want to go to Phuket Splash Water Park what's the approximate driving time? And finally.......any lovely Thai cooking schools?

Apologies for the questions and thanking you in advance.

Hi

* are there plenty of restaurants to try - there is a row of beach restaurants adjacent to the JWM on the right that are to be relocated further back from the high tide line during the coming Wet Season. There is another the the left and there more near the main entrance. The main townships of Bang Niang and Bang La On where are many restaurants serving various cuisines are 10 and 15 minutes away by shuttle, taxi or car.

* are bicycles easy to hire? - not aware of any at or near JWM but you can hire for the day or more in Bang Niang ( e.g. Green Biking Club on the Beach Road) or Bang La On ( e.g. Tiffy's Café on Highway on the left as you enter Bang La On)

* Is Khao Lak hilly or flat? - both! Khao Lak is basically a linear area with the highway with coast on one side and mountains/hills on the other.

* Is it easy to arrange sea fishing? - Yes. Best place is either through a tour shop, there is one in the precinct near the main entrance as well as many others in town, or direct from places on either side of the creek that divides Bang Niang and Nang Thong Beaches, or through Khun Nai, owner of Green Andaman Travel is one of most experienced local fishermen/guides - see http://www.greenandamantravel.com/

* If we want to go to Phuket Splash Water Park what's the approximate driving time? - The Water Park is in Mai Khao which is just on Phuket Island north of the airport so is about an hour's drive from the JWM.

* And finally.......any lovely Thai cooking schools? - plenty, in either townships. Our particular favourite is Goy at the Everyday 2 Restaurant, which is the last restaurant on the left opposite the Sensimar Resort as you leave Bang La On before going over the mountain.

"Now i'd like to know is 17 nights too long?" - as someone who stays for 4-5 months every year, that's a rhetorical question!!!
