Waves/Rip Currents Late April-Early May

We are looking to stay at the JW Marriott Khao Lak from April 29-May 4. That time of year are you generally able to swim in the ocean? Will snorkeling day trips still operate to the Similans? Or will the approaching monsoon season restrict us to the pool and other land activities?

Thanks

The ocean is rougher in April?may but the JWM is one of the few resorts that has a lifeguard on duty and posts warning flags about the safety of swimming. The Similan Islands, Koh Tachai and Surin Islands close on 30th April so you have very little time to get in a trip but you should be able to book on arrival if sea conditions are favourable.

There is an addition to the Koh Similans National Park web site that says " In rainy season, the national park will be closed during 16 May - 31 October every year for visitors safety." See dnp.go.th/parkreserve/asp/style1/default.asp… Since Koh Tachai comes under the Similans National Park I presume it will apply there also as it did in 2012 but that is upto the Chief of the National Park.

The surf/waves in Khao Lak is just like any other ocean beach in the world....

The waves maybe up or down even tho' May is the start of surf season....!!....To swim in the ocean is @ your discretion...if the ocean waves appear small and you think it is safe, then by all means swim, however make sure the lifeguard notices you....It does not matter if the waves are small or large, there could be rips,in fact it is even more dangerous when the swell is small because one can underestimate the power of the rip and swim, thinking that it is safe....So please be alert at all times....
