price of beer

hi everyone,

just realised after having been reading the forum for while in anticipation of our trip at the end of the year that the price of beer seems relatively expensive in comparison to gambia or goa for instance where you can get a bottle for under £1 in most eateries.

is this true? or am i panicking for nothing, we like a beer in the evening and would hate to have to count the pennies while we'r there.

please advise!

all the best.

angela

The average price of a small beer in a restaurant or bar is about 60 - 80 baht, a large beer about 80 -120 baht. A glass of wine is about 100 - 120 baht and a cocktail about 150 baht buyt many nplaces offering BOGOF or Happy Hour lasting all day in some places for 99baht.

hmm a bit better than i feared,

we don't really consume large amounts,

Although many local restaurants let you take your own wine (not as many as there were as most now sell it themselves) I don't know any, other dining areas attached to a mimi-mart or food court that allow you to bring your own beer from your fridge if you want it with a meal and certainly no bars allow you to bring your own beer.

another possibility andy53 i agree,

at home that is what we do most days,

but being first timers to thailand and khao lak

we like exploring and drinking in the various smells, sounds and flavours of the area, which is all part of the fun.

can't wait tbh

we like to have a little cocktail hour of our own on the balcony overlooking the sea while in khao lak, so stock up our fridge with supplies from the local shops. We may then move on to other venues, like bars or restaurants where we will purchase drinks from them.

Mixing and matching will bed more relaxing as well as saving those pennies!

On our last trip, we found this private cocktail hour so very relaxing that we quite simply continued it with room service on the balcony, followed by a moonlight walk on the beach. it was heavenly.

another tip- we sometimes buy a small bottle of 'thai whiskey' from the restaurant, and drink this mixed with water; it is usually very reasonably priced. It doesn't taste like whiskey at all, but is a lovely drink. If we haven't finished the bottle, we have been known to bring it back to the same restaurant the following night.

Probably Sangsom. Very popular with coke as it is rum. Thai version of a cuba libra. :-)

will definitely give sansom a try

even if it doesn't taste brilliant, ones outlook usually changes after a couple of glasses i found

not forgotten many years back now, the locally made retsina in greece, it didn't even have a label, had a strong whiff of engine oil at first sip, by the end of the night it tasted entirely delicious and the hangover was something to behold. :)

11 months and counting.
