Khao Lak - Ko Lanta

Hi, Can anyone advise on the best way for a family (kids 8,6 and 3) to get from Khao Lak to ko Lanta?

I've read there are minivans(our least favourite way to travel) but they take 7 hrs. Is this correct? Are there public buses? Ferry connections?

Or would we be better with a driver - any idea how long the trip would take, the cost and if the driver would be happy to have breaks as we liked (eg long lunch somewhere - recommend a stop?)

Thanks very much

also - has anyone been to both of the turtle sanctuaries and could recommend one over the other? Or both worth a visit?

From Khao Lak to Koh Lanta is pretty far , the only way and I know , you might have to take minivan to get to Krabi (koh Lanta), for bus I'm not sure where to catch it from there.

Hi Alana J,

We've done that a few times. Try Boss (because he is!) at

cheaper_khaolak@ymail.com - to get you to krabi

We then use Rob at

amazinglanta@ymail.com - a speedboat transfer to Lanta, and they'll take you to your hotel too. If you check their website they do drop off's at certain beaches too. Good fun, the kids will love it!

There is no direct public bus service from Khao Lak to Koh Lanta and to use an indirect bus service would mean at least two changes and getting yourself to the ferry from Krabi. The best way would be to contact Boss of Cheaper than Hotel Taxis on cheaper_khaolak@ymail.com He does regular transfers to Koh Lanta including arranging ferry transfer and is very efficient and most competitive rates.

* The Royal Marine Turtle Unit is located on the Navy Base at Tab Lamu which is about 20 minutes from Khao Lak, depending on where you are staying. It is only a small site with tanks containing baby turtles hatched on one of the Similan Islands, brought to the Unit to be reared and sick ones treated (if possible) before taking back and releasing from the Similans when they are about a year old. There are also some older, bigger turtles there too.

* The Marine Conservation Unit is located on the beach road at Thai Mueang just before the entrance to the Headquarters of the National Park. This is about 45km from Khao Lak, taking upwards of an hour to reach there. It is a much bigger site with more larger tanks of varying sizes containing not only turtles but a variety of marine life from tiny Nemo fish to huge sea groupers and beautiful anemones that are reared there before taking out to plant on reefs.

For further details have a look at the two self-drive trips South of Khao Lak in this link tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g297914-c167750/Kha…

If you don't have a hire car you will need to hire a car with driver as these are not offered as day tours. Again contact Boss. He will probably take you to either or both.

The minivan route from Khao Lak should/will be timed to connect to Lanta at a transfer station on the outskirts of Krabi. The drive time will be around 2 1/2 hours from Khao Lak and 2 hours for the Lanta leg with maybe a bit of time waiting/resting/eating in Krabi. Leave around 7am and arrive in Lanta for a late lunch.

450THB and 400THB`ish per head, not sure how much the kids would be charged.

Public busses are cheaper but the last one I took from Lhao Lak I was sitting on the floor next to the loo and the WIFI never worked. :-/
