The Similan Islands, like the Surin Islands and Koh Tachai are open from 1st November to 30th April each year.

There are many tour operators running mainly one day snorkelling trips to the Similans. The two best ones that we have used and would recommend are Fantastic Similan Travel (see http://fantasticsimilan.com/) and Khao Lak Land Discovery (see http://www.khaolaklanddiscovery.com/eng/index.php?PHPSESSID=a1c9aada61f3c10c86d6d2e85c9a022d) but there are others such as Ruk Talay.

Sop around for prices when you are in Khao Lak but in March you should expect to pay about 1800 - 2000 baht per person which includes pick up from and return to your resort; transfer to pier at Tab Lamu (about 15 minutes depending on where you are staying and others being picked up; speedboat to and from Similans (takes about 75 minutes); use of mask, snorkel and fins; snorkel trips, sightseeing at one island and lunch on another.

My wife and I are on our honeymoon in Phuket right now and used Ruk Talay yesterday to do a day trip to the Similan Islands. I am on here to recommend that everyone avoid using Ruk Talay. The fact that I am taking time out of our honeymoon right now to write this should indicate how displeased we were with the trip.

The destination is fantastic, but the service we used to get their was horrible. There was one man in particular on the crew, the leader who calls himself Mr. B, that spent most of the trip yelling at everybody.

Our biggest complaint is that they cut us short on our time during the stops. The crew would start honking the boat horn and yelling at us to get on the boat long before our time was up.

The trip brochure and the company's website both stated that fins would be provided, but when we were on the boat we were told that the boat doesn't have room for them. The crew told us that we could have rented them from their office. The biggest problem with that is they didn't tellus until we were already at sea!

The day started with their transfer (pickup from hotel) driver showing up over an hour late in the morning.
