Seasoned Thailand traveller but first time to Khao Lak

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are going to Khao Lak in December and am just wondering what the atmosphere is like there in the evenings. This'll be my 4th time to Thailand; I've been to places such as Samui, Koh Phangan, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Railay. Can anyone offer a comparison?

I know it's a fairly laid back place but is it so laid back that there's not much to do after the sun has gone down. Essentially, we want to be able to go out to a few bars and restuarants and go to some markets. Will we find this here?

I've read the FAQs, any other info is appreciated. Thanks

"Essentially, we want to be able to go out to a few bars and restaurants ... " That really sums up Khao Lak after sunset. Or rather starting with a cocktail overlooking the beach or just sat on the sand watching the often amazing sunsets before going to your restaurant/bar and venue of choice. Greatest choice is in Bang La On and Bang Niang.

Most of the time KL closes down by about 11pm but there are a few live music bars that only really start about 10pm and go on until the early hours.

From mid-December it starts to get busy as Xmas and New Year visitors arrive but KL is never packed full. Very similar to the Koh Samui and Ao Nang that I remember before they became commercialised (only 1 McDs in KL, no other commercial fast food places)

There are no night markets but a popular and busy market from 2pm to 7pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays selling everything from food (fresh or local cooked snacks) hardware, clothes, shoes, artifacts, souvenirs - all the stuff you generally find on night markets but which are sold in the shops lining the highway in Bang La On and the beach road in Bang Niang.

Everywhere's different and each has it's own atmosphere but we preffered Khao Lak to Krabi or Phi Phi, it's not as busy as Samui but still enough bars and restaurants to keep you occupied.
