Khao Lak comprises a coastline of over 25km of beautiful beaches on one side and hills, mountains and forests on the other. The area is a National Park and is renowned for its more laid back atmosphere and lack of western commercialism found in the likes of Patong and Chaweng. There is plenty of general information in the Top Question FAQs on the right, particularly the link to this Traveller Article tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g297914-c120551/Kha…

It is the most popular starting pointing point for tours to the Similan and Surin Islands and Koh Tachai during the Dry Season November to April and for diving trips during that period.

It is just an hour from the beautiful Khao Sok National Park, an hour to the north and the awesome Cheow Lan Lak an hour further. Phang Nga Bay (home of James Bond Island but offering much. much more) just over an hour to the south.

Have a look at the maps link and in particular post #7 in the following link to show the various locations in Khao Lak tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k…

If you want easy access to restaurants, bars and shops then Bang La On (Nang Thong Beach), Bang Niang and to a lesser extent Khao Lak (South) Beach area are the places to consider.

As for accommodation if you give an idea of when you are considering going (important as prices in Wet Season, May to October, are often less than half of the rest of the year), what type of accommodation and facilities you are looking for (Resort or bungalow, with or without its own pool), location (near to restaurants etc or on more secluded beach) and in particular your daily budget for accommodation so that recommendations can be made accordingly.

I am thinking of doing a Koh Lak - Kabri combo trip in the holiday season in Dec. Have some general questions.

Does jellyfish sting happen year round or tend to happen more often in certain season or weather condition ?

Currently considering one of the 4* resort, either Aspartus Resort or Kantary Reosrt ? Are they both on the same beach -- White Sand Beach ? How do they compare ? Further, is there any place to rent motor bike near these resorts ?

Not into diving or snokelling, then what is the island tour to recommend. Is there any more relaxing tour ? I have been to James Bond island in high season, that seems a bit too crowded and hassle to my taste.

I have been to Koh Lak once few years ago, staying in Mukdara Resort then. So I have some idea what Koh Lak is about.

There are jellyfish throughout the year but mostly are not troublesome except when heavy seas drive them inshore.

The Apsaras is on Pakarang Beach along with just a few more resorts and a couple of local restaurants. This resort is very popular with French tourists.

The Kantary is on Pak Weeb Beach about 200 metres from White Sand Beach with more beach dining options. This resort is specifically marketed in Scandinavia as a family resort and is very popular for kids.

Both are about 25 minutes from Bang La On, the main township of Khao Lak.

You are more likely to hire motor bikes near the Asaras than the Kantary. In any event if you do decide to hire a bike remember you need an International Driving Permit issued in your own country to drive legally and to be covered by insurance.

Nearest islands are Simians, Surins & Koh Tachai but the tours there are for snorkelers/divers. As for James Bond Island, Phanf

G Nga bay has far more to offer! You can also go north to Khao Sok National Park and the awesome Cheow LAN Lake and stay in a tree house at the NP and in. Floating raft house on the Lake.
