The Sands Khoa Lak by Kata Thani

Been offered a fairly good deal for this hotel for April 2013, but as it is a new hotel (due to open Nov 2012 I believe), there are obviously no reviews. Was hoping someone could tell us what the location is like, ie: how far to local bars/restaurants, shops etc.

The other option we are looking at is The Bandara in Bo Phut, but we did Samui last year, and have never been to Khao Lak so really fancy this place as long as it's not too isolated. Many thanks.

The Sands is at the northern end of the strip of resorts on Nang Thong Beach. The beach runs parallel with the main highway running all the way through Khao Lak and this part of the highway covers the main township of Khao Lak, Bang La On, or often referred to as Khao Lak Town or just Khao Lak. This is where you will find most of the restaurants, bars and shops although there are more 10 minutes up the highway in Bang Niang. When I last visited the site in January it was not clear whether the main entrance to the Sands will be from the beach road that runs behind the beach from resorts or from the highway. In any event you should be no more than 10 - 15 minute stroll to the main town area.

Tis part of the beach is undeveloped but a short walk north will bring you first to a pretty little bay with a restaurant and bar and just beyond that a strip of local restaurants and bars leading to the river creek where you cross to get on to Bang Niang Beach. Very good location IMO.

We walked past the site when staying at nang thong bay resort last week. The beach in front of the resort is great and you are not too far from the town and local restaurants. They are hoping to open in October.

Thanks to both of you for your prompt replies. Have actually managed to find a resort website, and though I think many of the pictures are "artists impressions", it does look fabulous. Location sounds just what we are looking for, so I think we will give it a go. This will be our 9th Thailand trip, but first to Khao Lak. Looking forward to it - roll on April !

The special promo opening rates for booking direct are certainly very attractive.

Our travel agent has just returned from The Sands and has almost talked us into going there next year - she was very impressed. I would give The Bandara a miss - nothing much wrong with the hotel (no beach to speak of) but the pool is lovely) but Koh Samui was "dead" when we were there in late 2010.

Cheers

It is a good deal - we are here currently. Good location on the beachfront - a surf beach - but the surf can be rugged. Two large pools - one with a bar - adults only. Staff are extremely helpful and very friendly -although few have any English beyond a few stock phrases. The trees are still growing after being all but destroyed by the Tsunami.

Breakfasts are great and Thai dishes in the two restaurants are excellent and inexpensive.

Set menu dinners as part of the deal - not so great.

Taxis to nearby restaurants are ll100baht ($3 approx).

We did the James Bond Island day trip through the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it !

If management is reading this - it would be appreciated if you could do something about those guests that take the lounges nearest the pool every day? They either get up at dawn to "reserve" the best spots by placing their towels on the lounges - or maybe they leave their towels on the same chairs overnight. Then they go away for hours on end preventing anyone else from using "their" seats. Not in keeping with the spirit of this very friendly resort .

Unlikely that Sands management will pick up on your comments through your post. Better to write a review in the Review Section at tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g297914-d3239… or Email the resort.
