Where to stay in Khao LAk

We are going to Khoa lak in October with our 2 year old and would like any reccomendations on where to stay. I would like to stay in a hotel which we can walk to resturants and markets (if any) If this is possible. And which bay is the best for this.

Many Thanks

The main market in Khao Lak is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from about 1pm to 7pm and is within walking distance of any of the resorts on Bang Niang Beach or just back from it.

Have a look at this overall map of Khao Lak to show you the bigger picture http://khaolakyellowpages.com/map.html

and this more detailed one of Bang Niang walagata.com/w/arandora/Bang_Niang_2010.jpg

If you could give an indication of your daily budget for accommodation this will help to identify resorts that match it. The Ramada and La Flora are particularly recommended 4* resorts and the Cousin is an excellent value for money 2* Bungalow Resort with family bungalows with 2 bedrooms as as the Ayara Villas Resort.

October is at the end of the Wet Season and Khao Lak is still quiet with beach restaurants not yet open as well as others that close for the season.

You may wish to consider the main area of Khao Lak, Bang La On which is just 10 minutes down the road with the markets being easy to get to by sang thaew (local taxi). The Nang Thong Bay Resort and sister Nang Thong Thong Beach Resort are two very popular and reasonably priced resorts there.

Adding to Alan's last para (previous post), we stayed at NRBR1 in April. The beach is quite peaceful, good for walks all day, we usually got out at 0530AM. The beach curves a bit, so the waves are not rough, should be child friendly, with the usual precautions.

The road outside NTBR1 leading up to the Highway is a 5 minute walk and has many restaurants and stores. The hotel staff drop you to the Highway in an electric buggy if you wish. And they get you a mobile recharge done quickly using the buggy. :)

Besides, plenty of beach restaurants and massage available around the area along the beach, overall very relaxing.

Our experience is here, with related Similan and Food post links at the end:

Thanks so much for your infomation, and especially the great maps!! I was looking into Nang Thong but sounds like Bang Niang is maybe more of what we are looking at. The Ramada keeps popping up and looks good.

Thanks again

Lee

We loved La Flora and as the Ramada is right next door they are both in good positions. Easy walking in to town for the restaurants and also lots on the beach but unfortunately Alan says they won't be open then.

They might be. If conditions permit they will be open.
