Bangkok-Chaing Mai-Khao Lak in 2 weeks?

Hello, my wife, 7-year old daughter and i will be travelling to Thailand in early May, for approximately 2 weeks. Needless to say, we couldn't be more excited! We will be in Bangkok for the first 5 days (also a business trip), and also plan to go north to Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai. Khao Sok and Cheow Lan lake look incredible and we'd love to make it there as well.

Is that realistic, or will travel take up too much of our time?

Would it be better to go from Bangkok to CM first, or to Khao Sok first?

If we do make it down south, should we stay in Khao Lak instead? It looks like more options, and perhaps not too far from the park?

Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks!

Hi,

Assuming 14 days total, you have 5 days Bangkok, 3 days (minimum) Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai, then fly Chiang Mai to Phuket, just over an hour north by taxi and you are in Khao Lak for 6 days.

Khao Sok is just over an hour from Khao Lak and Cheow Lan Lake an hour further from that. Although a long day you can have a great full day tour taking in a canoe ride on the River Sok and a longtail boat trip on the magnificent Cheow Lan Lake. Using Khao Lak as your base you could also do a full day tour to the equally wonderful Phang Nga Bay including a visit to Wat Suwan Kuha aka The Monkey Temple - see pics at https:/…

Although May is the first month of the Wet Season, of recent years it has enjoyed hot and sunny days with any rain being afternoon heavy showers which quickly dry up. Although not as many visitors you enjoy accommodation at prices often less than 50% of just a week or so previously.

Thank you for the information! We probably will stay in CM for a bit longer than 3 days, but I think we'll follow your recommended route. Still trying to decide between using Khao Lak as a base, or staying closer to Khao Sok, with maybe a night on the lake. Looking at Le Meridien perhaps, looks like it would be a good choice with a family.

The Le M is an excellent family choice. It has a seperate wing for families with their own pools and the best Kids Club in Khao Lak. It is one of the northern most resorts in Khao Lak but still 1 hour to Khao Sok and 2 hours to the Lake. If you are staying at Khao Sok you could stay in a tree house near the entrance to the NP or a raft house on the Lake (or both if you do 2 nights). We stayed in the Baan Khao Sok Resort in a tree house, a lovely resortr near the rivr overlooked by cliffs and tubes for the kids to float down the river on. We booked through Mthilde at Khao Sok Explorer at khao-sok-explorer.e-monsite.com/accueil.html who organised tours as well and will organise accommodation on the lake too. I'm afraid it is much too simple for us! LOL
