love the orchid resort! you can get a massage by the pool area if you like.
Walk the few steps to the beach and turn left. 10 minutes or so along the beach you will come to sunset bar- also has nice dinners. Haven't been for lunch but it is a great place at sunset. Looks like a few more places along the beach lunchtime.
Lunch around the pool is also nice at the Orchid. Restaurant okay but we often take their shuttle (50B) into town and eat there. Lots of choice.
Have a great time. Hotel can arrange trips like snorkelling at similan islands, elephants etc at reasonable prices. last season snorkelling day was 2200B for example.
If we want to take a long walk some day, is it possible to walk from the Orchid to Biang Niang? If it is, how long time does it take? It looks like there is a river and a lagoon or a small lake in between. In "the good old days" (before the tsunami) it was possible to walk all the way from Sunset Beach to Caparang Cape, but I guess that is not possible anymore?
You can still walk all the way from Sunset Beach to Pakarang and beyond, indeed all the way beyond to the far end of Bang Sak Bay - BUT it depends firstly on your stamina, secondly being able to withstand exposure to the sun for a very long time (with plenty of water to prevent dehydration) and finally and most importantly the state of the tides at the time you have to cross the several creeks along the way. The water flow is often deep and strong.
The most difficult ones to traverse normally are those at either side of the Orchid. You may get across one way but become stranded on the other on your way back.
However, at the creek across from Khuk Khak to Bang Niang Beach enterprising young boys from the Sunset Bar often offer to push you across in a canoe. If not it is certainly no hardship to have a drink at Sunset or snack at the Sunset while you wait or at the bar on the other side on Bang Niang Beach. The Sunset Bar is particularly recommended for a sunset dinner but better to agree your meal in advance particularly if you want best choice of fresh fish or seafood. Take a bottle of wine with you from the supermarket to complement the meal.
In between the Orchid and the Sunset is the recently opened 02 Beach Club with lounging and bar on the beach then the main complex with pool and fully stocked bar/restaurant across a couple of footbridges inland across the lagoon,
If you do go north from the Orchid, just the other side of the next creek is a cute little bar with a massage parlour in a boat floating behind it on the lagoon. Further beyond this and past the Andamania Resort there are massage places and a restaurant then the J W Marriott and immediately beyond that several restaurants, bars and massage places. Beyond that and across the creek and you are on Pakarang Beach.
Thank you soooo much for this info Arandora!!!
Wow, lots of nice pics there that gave us a good feeling for how that area looks nowadays. We can't wait for our third return visit to KL, the place where my wife and I met and spent our first 6 months together almost 10 years ago. KL is not the same as it was then, the tsunami changed the landscape and "progress" changed Bang La On, but it's still our favorite place in the world (and we have been to around 60 countries, so that is a proof of how special KL is). We will not talk a lot of long walks this time since we have 2 small children now, but maybe we will still see eachother. Thanks again.
Unfortunately it would appear the Sunst Bar has been washed away during the Wet Season and, so far, no signs of being rebuilt at its previous location. Great pity. I know they opened Sunset Bar 2 on the highway near Khuk Khak Bus Station but I do hope that they open another somewhere else on the beach. Nop, the main man, is a genius with his use of local artifacts to fabricate items for his unique meal presentation.
Oh no, that's not good at all. I hope there are no other beach restaurants that was washed away, but of course the location of the Sunset Bar is pretty vulnerable due to the river beside it. I hope that they can build it up fast again when the rainy season hopefully soon is over and the tourists are returning.Edited: 28 October 2011, 22:30
Where there is a will, they will definitely find a way. I will be posting updates when we return on 23rd November.
