Tons of questions about actvities...

Hi,

we're staying two weeks at Merlin during Christmas, 'only visited Khao Lak briefly from Phuket before. After some research, these are the excursions I'm considering (already after great help from Arandora):

- Similan islands (never been there; what questions should I be asking?)

- Kayaking along the “little amazon”, Takua Pa

- Green water rafting, Tab Lamu

- Snorkeling the Khao Na Yak Reef (live coral or dead after the tsunami? Any land/islands there at all or only snorkeling ffrom the boat? How good snorkelling relative to e.g. Phi Phi?)

- Are there any beautiful temples close by (or should we go to Wat Bang Riang; how long would that take by taxi?)

- Is Takua Pa Old Town Sunday market worth a visit?

- Probably two waterfall excursions (the kids still love them), but which ones? Not too far by car, not too far too walk (like 30 minutes); fun and perhaps a pool but still reasonably safe for 12-14 year olds that are NOT EVER careful

- Rent a small sailing boat

- Elephants: The kids still have a limited interest in riding elephants but like hanging out with them (especially the young ellies, of course), feeding them, bathing them etc. even more. Are there elephant farms more of that kind?

Given that we like these kinds of activities, are there other obvious similar possibilities that I have missed? Thanks for any info!

I assume you've read the various Top Questions FAQs on the right and you are looking to fill in some gaps or some aspects that are missing? So rather than attempting to cover every question in detail, I'll try and fill some gaps in.

- Similan islands (never been there; what questions should I be asking?)

* Book as soon as you arrive, shop around for best price. Fantastic Similans, Ruk Tulay among others are recommended.

- Kayaking along the “little amazon”, Takua Pa and Green water rafting, Tab Lamu.

* Contact Green Andaman Travel at http://greenandamantravel.com/

- Snorkeling the Khao Na Yak Reef

* - See http://www.khaolak.net/diving/localdive.html It is a nice half day longtail boat trip from Bang Niang Beach and the coral is showing signs of recovery but limited underwater life in comparison with established snorkelling sites.

- Are there any beautiful temples close by (or should we go to Wat Bang Riang; how long would that take by taxi?)

* There are several temples in and around Khao Lak, the one at Tab Lamu probably being the largest and most striking but not of the same significance as Wat Bang Riang which is probably about 2 hours away by taxi. Contact Boss of Cheaper than Hotels Taxis at cheaper_khaolak@ymail.com and ask him and do a search for "the Three Temples Tour".

- Is Takua Pa Old Town Sunday market worth a visit? If you have time, Yes. You could probably do this in combination with Little Amazon or contact local guide Lora of Dior Travel at diorkhaolak@yahoo.co.th to arrange a visit there and other places of interest in the vicinity and also the Three Temples tour.

- Probably two waterfall excursions.

* The best two in Khao Lak are Sairung which is up past Le Meridien to the north and Chong Fah which is in the centre in Bang Niang going inland just opposite Moo Moo's Cabaret Bar. Neither within 30 minutes walking distance. The pool at Sairung is more accessible than the one at Sairung where you have to clamber over rocks. The best one with best pool is Lampi which is about 40 minutes by car/taxi back towards Phuket. Part of another guided tour?

- Rent a small sailing boat.

* None from KL. The only place to rent a hobie cat is from Bang Niang Beach as advised in your other post.

- Elephants.

* The best trek with opportunity to bathe and feed the ellies is IMO the Sairung Elephant Trek which is about 25 minutes north of centre of Khao Lak beyond Le Meridien on the right going towards Takua Pa.
