Vote! Khao Lak or Krabi in November

Trying to decide between staying at the JW Marriott in Khao Lak or staying somewhere on Ao nang in Krabi.

If you had a choice which beach would you stay on?

I will be there November 13-19, so i could even try for both, but they seem a bit far apart.

Also I have read some things that imply that the seas in Khao Lak might be rougher than the seas in Krabi, thoughts?

Also can you snorkel directly offshore at either?

Khuk Khak Beach on which the JWM is located is beautiful with sometimes high rollers but there is a broad expanse in front of the resort. There are only 3 other resorts on this beach, each separated with a creek. There are several local beach restaurants adjacent to the JWM otherwise it is a 15 minute shuttle or Taxi into the main townships of Bang Niang or a further 5 minutes to Bang La On.

There is no snorkelling offshore along this beach or indeed any of Khao Lak's 25km of beaches. However, there are 2 World Class sites, the Similans ans Surin Islands for which Khao Lak is the most popular starting point to their respective piers.

Whilst Krabi has spectacular views of limestone formations in the sea and on the land the beaches are not IMHO nearly as nice. Ao Nang is very much a working beach with longtails going to and fro to other beaches and popular nearby islands. It is also very much more commercialised.

No snorkelling offshore here.

No comparison as far as I'm concerned (and I've stayed at both) so it's 1 big vote for Khao Lak for me.

We are trying to make the same decision. We are leaning more towards Krabi because of its beauty and activities, but it does seem like the accomodation and beaches are nicer in Khao Lak.

We've been to Krabi several times and only visited Khao Lak briefly (going there this year, though). These places are rather different; what kind of vacation are you looking for?. Ao Nang is a lot buzier with lots of touristy shops, bars and nighlife. The "domestic" beach is mediocre but there is a bunch of great island beaches with good but not really great snorkelling within a cheap and easy 30 minute longtail boat ride. Is is hard to find really good hotels at a reasonably central location in Ao Nang. Khao Lak has better mainland beaches and a wider choice of upmarket hotels, more similar to Lanta in that the beaches are very long with a few hotels and restaurants every now and then, not at all buzy and crowded like Ao Nang. We expect to do a lot of nature related stuff there.
