Khao Lak shopping

We will be staying at the Marriott in Khao Lak in Sep/Oct.

Can someone advise:

1. Where is the nearest supermarket?

2. Can you buy DVDs?

3. Are there some good restaurants near the hotel?

Thanks! Would really appreciate some info.

1. Where is the nearest supermarket? - the nearest township is Bang Niang about 10 minutes by taxi or shuttle and there is a 711 on the corner neat the 3 times weekly market (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 2pm to 7pm) and several other mini-marts on the highway (one next to Moo Moo's), one near Tony Lodge Hotel and down the beach toad but biggest supermarket, the Nang Thong Supermarket is a further 10 minutes down the highway in Bang La On where you will find smaller supermarkets, mini-marts and most shops.

2. Can you buy DVDs? - Khao Lak is not a great place for copy DVDs or CDs with just one place with limited stock near the Nang Thong Supermarket.

3. Are there some good restaurants near the hotel? - you may not find any of the several beach restaurants near the JWM open at the time you are staying there because of the unsuitability of the beach with high tides and rough seas. Best selection of restaurants are in Bang Niang and Bang La On. There have been several recent topics with members in KL at the moment advising on the ones which are open.

Another good supermarket is Khao Lak Supermarket which is a couple of minutes walk north of the Nang Thong Supermarket. There are also a few 711's in Bang La On.

There are a few shops selling watches in Bang La On and plenty of bag shops there and in Bang Niang. Quality is "variable."

Hello, We will also be staying at the JWM in December. Will there be more restaurants open then? Where's a good place to buy curtains, pillows, and teak housewares and furniture? Will they ship overseas?

Will there be more restaurants open then? - Yes. The beach restaurants either side of the JWM are already open or starting to open.

Where's a good place to buy curtains, pillows, and teak housewares and furniture? - There are plenty of shops in Bang La On. the main township of Khao Lak, 15 mins or so from the JWM by shuttle or taxi that sell the type of items you have mentioned with the exception of teak furniture. However, there is an excellent shop on the right of the highway only a short distance going north from the main entrance on the highway to the JWM near the temple entrance (you will soon find it when you are there) which specialises in teak furniture and household goods and which, I believe, ships overseas.

A word of warning. When you ask for a quote for shipping to your home make sure it includes ALL the costs both from the origin in Thailand to your home country. We bought some teak furniture in Chiang Mai and thought we had paid for everything only to find 4 weeks later when the container arrived in UK waters we had to pay for its onward delivery to us, customs charges and the cost of a sniffer dog as the container had originated in Thailand!!

Thank you so much for your quick and helpful reply! Is it imperative or even appropriate to bargain for furniture/household goods/etc.?

"Is that your best price?" is always worth asking.
