Khao Lak or Krabi?

Heading to Thailand for 2 weeks in Jan 2012. It'll be our 3rd visit. Looking for good snorkelling and scuba diving, 'real' thai food and relaxation. Toss-up between Khao Lak and Krabi. Krabi looks more beautiful but busier and more touristy. Anyone any advice?

Krabi may have the edge in terms of the fabulous limestone scenery but having spent time in both, and more in Khao Lak, KL has far nicer beaches - over 25km of them - is certainly less commercialised than Ao Nang, is more laid back, has accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, great restaurants both in the towns and on the beaches, and is on the doorstep to two World Class diving and snorkeling sites, the Similan Islands and the Surin Islands. Wonderful Khao Sok National Park is just an hour to the north and Phang Nga Bay about the same to the south. Krabi is just two hours away.

Plenty of information and tips in the FAQs on the right.

If you want information on accommodation an idea of your budget would help. Meantime have a look at these links also:

If you want to go for scuba diving then Similan islands is the right place for you. You need to get off shore from Khaolak to get to Similan. Khaolak is good to stay for up to a week but not for that long. Plus things are quite expensive in Khaolak when compared to other touristy places like Krabi or Phuket. 2 weeks is actually enough for both Khaolak and Krabi. If you have a chance, visit Maya bay in Krabi, thats good place for snorkelling.

Certainly don't agree that that things are more expensive in Khao Lak compared with Phuket or Krabi and it depenbds what you want to do as there are many activities, tours etc. in and around Khao Lak to occupy you far more than 1 week. However, many find 1 week in KL and 1 week in Krabi a good compromise.

Hi,

Khao Lak as Arandora has mentioned does have the edge on its beaches and Krabi certainly has the wow factor for its dramatic scenery. Having said that from Krabi you will find beautiful beacheas just a short longtail boat ride away with good snorkeling. As I love both places I always twin my time to get the best of both worlds as Arandora has said its only 2 hours away and 2400 bht by taxi. I have always found prices similar. Here is a link to some photos of the offshore islands around Ao Nang icluding Maya Bay phi phi, and Bamboo Island near Phi Phi .

and this link to the Hong Islands a short longtail boat ride from Ao Nang

There is plenty to do in both locations with real thai authentic food at both. I have always found Khao Lak to be more relaxing as Ao Nang is more a get out and about place as the main beach is a woprking beach for the longtails coming and going from the islands and Railay which has the wow factor. Khao Lak is more laid back and you can do as much as you want or as little as you want and a great place to just chill.

Julie

Do you think 3 days spent at each is enough? I wasn't going to spend time in Khao Lak other than a day trip to Similan Islands but now you have all convinced me to rethink that!

We hve visited both and Khao Lak is by far our favourite, most of the hotels are directly on the beach whereas in Krabi only the very expensive ones seem to have direct access. We prefered the town in Khao lak far less busy and commercial than Ao Nang, price wise they are much the same although the hotel in Khao Lak was half the price of the one in Krabi but just as good in fact better.
