Where to go in Khao Lak

Hi can anyone help us decide where in Khao Lak is best suited for two couples looking for nice restaurants/beach bars/a skattering of shops within walking distance(or short taxi ride) of a 3 or 4 star hotel for around £70 per room per night...

Flights are booked arriving 3rd March 2012 can we expect good weather, what is the best way to get from phuket airport and approximate cost of the transport.

Hi Ian,I am sure someone else can help you with your accomodation...However,to predict the weather for March 2012 is impossible..One can only give an idea what the weather was like in March this year but it can be totally different in March next year...??......Best bet is to check Magicseaweed.com the week before you leave....Tho' it wouldn't matter too much if it rains or not if you have already booked...

They have surf and weather predictions one week in advance and are pretty spot on.....In fact a few of your questions can be answered in the FAQ column....

Hi Ian

we stayed at Merlin Resort (chosen because of staying at Merlin resorts in Phuket and love them) this one is no exception and we loved it (maybe more), booked again for this year in Sept (can't wait) www.merlinphuket.com

it is located south end Khao Lak, couple of good beach bars and plenty of good restaurants around ,we loved Jo's seafood restaurant the best, and the little beach bar just outside of Merlin, lovely beach with great beach massage huts 300bhat, 4 pools and swim up pool bar in the main pool overloooking the beach,

just out on the street are plenty of little restruants, few bars, few small shops, money exchange, tour kiosks, family stores (for buying you essentials) massage, small chemist and laundry 60bhat kilo, but for more options it is only a 5-10 min taxi ride into main town 150bhat (didn't bother us at all)

for your budget you would get the pool access rooms which are great, if you choose this resort i can give you details of who to contact and best room #'s

If you prefer to be in the main Khao Lak town area known as Bang La On (beach in that area Nang Thong) loads of dining options, bars and shops, then there are a few good resorts there too, Nang Thong resort in beach bungalows is very nice www.nangthong.com and only few min walk up to the main road for everything you need

another 10min further north is Bang Niang beach area which is 2nd largest area to main town for dining etc, beautiful beach (but then they all are in Khao Lak) and some lovely resorts around there a lot beachfront

www.khaolaklovers.com for more info on areas and hotels

for your transport to and from the airport to Khao Lak contact Boss of cheaper than hotel taxis, he runs a fantastic service, 1000bhat from airport to Khao Lak main area 1200bhat further north areas of Khao Lak

e-mail him on: cheaper_khaolak@ymail.com

he is also good for tours, we done a few tours with him last year and all were great days out, a tour to Khao Sok national park and lakes is not to be missed....brilliant :-)

weather has been covered, March is usually one of the hottest months with this year being totally out of wack like the rest of the world, so hopefully next year will follow a more normal pattern and remain lovely for you

happy planning :-)

Hi,

For the last few years I have been in Khao Lak in early March usualy the weather is hot and sunny with the odd storm or shower. This past March the weather was strange still plenty of sun most days but clouded up really early with rain and storms. Hopefully rthe weather for next season will return to normal.

You have a wide choice of very good 3 and 4 star hotels and resorts in the Khao Lak area . If you are wanting an area that has a wide choice of beach bars /restaurants/ shops I like Bang Niang or Khao Lak Town ( Bang La On ) both are only 5 minutes apart by taxi. Have a look at

www.khaolak.de this will give you some choices to look at.

FX Resort Khao Lak in Bang Niang and its sister resort Fanari Beach are very nice Fanari is beach front Fx is only 2 minutes on the road behind. Here is a link to a JBR with photographs

Cousin Resort is also highly recommended

www.cousinresort.com

and the Khao Lak Riverside which is new and gettting very good reviews

Nang Thong Bay resort Bang La On is also highly recommended and within your budget. Have a look and come back to us if you want any more help.

We stayed at Nang Thong Resort 1 in late April in a beachfront villa and loved it. Sensational view right on the beach with separate villas so nice and quiet. Not sure about March but would think you would get a good rate (without breakfast) from them as we emailed direct and received an excellent rate.

Bang La on has many restaurants to choose from even though some will be closed I think. Try the Keeper as it was our favourite. Also walk down the beach heading right for 1km or so and have a drink at sunset at the little beachside eateries. Feet in the sand, ocean lapping up close and hopefully a stunning sunset to watch with hardly anyone around. Perfect.

Enjoy

Restaurants throughout Khao Lak will be open in March, they only start to close beginning of May at the start of the Wet Season.

For how long are restaurants closed. Going August, hotels almost full so why are restaurants closed?

What makes you think the hotels are almost full? It would be great for Khao Lak if they were but August is in the middle of the Wet or Low Season when visitor numbers are usually much lower and accommodation prices usually upto half of those in High Season to reflect this.

Restaurants on the beach close because of not only lower number of customers but mainly because sea and beach conditions mean many close until next Dry Season starting late October/November. Also other restaurants in Bang Niang close seasonally but more stay open in the main township of Bang La On.

Having said this there will be plenty of choice open for you.

Where are you staying?

Not sure yet but possibly KhaoLak Laguna Resort. Several hotels are saying 3 rooms left! In the Uk prices still seem high as it is our school holidays so prices are hiked. Is £40 a night cheap then compared to dry season? Thanks
