Which Beach?? which hotel?? please

Hi, having been to kata in phuket for the past 10 years we feel its about time for a change!!!

My husband quite fancies the lush greenery of khao lak and away from the madding crowd like in kata, howere we do like a few local bars restuarants etc. Can you recommend a beautiful beach with a small friendly hotel please. Must be on great beach (for me!!) with local bars etc.

Many thanks look forward to hearing from you, im eager to get planning for trip next feb/mar.

Time of year is one of best (usually!!) and two most popular beaches that have restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance, if that is a priority are Nang Thong, which is just down from the main township of Bang La On or Bang Niang which is 5 minutes or so by taxi up the coast from Bang La On. Of the two beaches I prefer Bang Niang, primarily because there are independent bars and restaurants on it or overlooking it, whereas at Nang Thong you rely mainly on the resorts.

Sunset Beach continues South from Nang Thong Beach and has some very nice resorts on it but no independent restaurants/bars and Bang Niang Beach continues to the North from the far end of Nang Thong Beach where there are a number of local restaurants, bars and massage places.

On the other (Phuket) side of the mountain, the first beach you reach is Khao Lak (South) Beach where there are just a handful of resorts but with enough restaurants to keep you happy and only 10 minutes by taxi from Bang La On.

The beautiful Khuk Khak Beach continues across a creek from Bang Niang Beach with just 3 resorts, the Orchid Beach, Andamania and J W Marriott along its full long stretch and a handful of restaurants near the JWM. Across the next creek is Pakarang Beach with 3 resorts at its north end then around Cape Pakarang is Pak Weeb Beach, viewed by most as Khao Lak's "jewel in the crown" with just the Kantary, Sarojin, White Sand Beach Bungalows (3 small restaurant/bungalow resorts) and around the headland, the Le Meridien. A new large bungalow resort, the Cassaway beyond the Le M is due to open late this year/early next..

Finally across the next creek is the last beach, Bangsak with just 3 resorts, the Royal Bangsak Beach, The Bangsak Village Resort and the Haadson Resort with the huge Gracelands at the northern end under construction.

See Khao Lak Map at http://www.khaolakmap.com/ and more detailed one of Bang Niang at www.khaolakforum.de/index.php…

An idea of standard of accommodation you are looking for, hotel or bungalow style, on or near beachfront, amenities/facilities, and budget would help with giving some suggestions.

Hi,

If you are used to Kata which used to be one of my choices for Phuket Bang Niang would be a good alternative. A new hotel which is getting great reviews at the moment and is small and friendly is the Khao Lak Riverside Resort and Spa.

Hi Arandora, many many thanks for such a great detailed description. Very helpful. We were once looking at the Ramada Resort when we were thinking of going a few years back. Not sure which beach this is. We are also thinking of maybe a slightly cheeper hotel (on a beach).

Jenson, thanks for your reply too, helpful again. We used to stay in Katathani at kata (Kata Noi) so used to have best of both worlds, ie, quiet by kata noi and then livelier in kata. We dont want too much in your face like kata was getting but enough not to get too bored!

Thanks very much for all your help

The Ramada is an excellent resort on the best part of Bang Niang Beach with restauirants on or overlooking the beach nearby as well as others all within easy walking distance.. The La Flora next door is another option.

Here are some pics of Ramada taken earlier this year.

Khao Lak is nothing like Kata, much nicer IMO.

The Khao Lak Riverside is just up the back road from the Ramada and is about 300 metres up from the beach on the bend of the Bang Niang River. You can see it at picture #83 in the second album.
