Sorry, yet another question. Are there plenty of money changers around Khao Lak or should we change our dollars at the airport?
You'll need some baht most likely as soon as you arrive. The airport banks charge the same rates as their other branches on the same day anywhere else. Almost all exchange booths are operated by the banks.
Thanks, we always change some immediately at the airport but then change the rest as we need it. Sounds like we can do that in Khao Lak.
Kiwi, I might suggest that if you don't get a good response to where to exchange in KL itself, that you refer your question to Arandora, one of the TA experts for Khao Lak-- Arandora spends a fair bit of the year there and knows the local area well.
One thing I'd remind you with regard to the bank run forex shops.. Rates DO vary between different banks.. but.. they do NOT vary between branches of the same bank.. So do look around and price shop the different banks, but don't bother checking different branches of the same bank.
Although there are a number of independent Money Changer booths in KL, mainly in Bang Niang, you get better rates for cash at Bank Exchanges, the best over the 5 months we have been in KL being at Kasikorn Bank in Bang La On but difference to other banks marginal really unless you have "mega bucks" to change.
