Days and Activities in Khao Lak.

Hi.

We are going to Surin and Similan islands 3 nights in each island.

We have to spend 2 nights in Khao Lak because of the transfers to the islands and then we will go to Phuket.

My question is, how many days do you recommend to stay in Khao Lak before to go to Phuket??

Are there many activities to do?? Trecking, exploring, snorkel....we are 3 guys around the 30´s and we are not looking for nightlife at all. Just things to do and see.

We have around 14 days to share between Phuket and Khao Lak.

Thank you!!

Thank you!!

Have a look at the Top Questions and FAQs at top right in this forum for loads of information about what to do in and around Khao Lak. By nightlife, I presume you mean "girlie bars" or clubs? Well there are none of those in Khao Lak, just Moo Moo's (Ladyboy) Cabaret Bar which is great fun. Khao Lak is very laid back with evening entertainment being sampling the excellent food at the many restaurants in the main townships of Bang La On and Bang Niang or chilling out at one on or overlooking the beach. There are also some great live music bars, notably the Happy Snapper in Bang La On and the Degree Bar, Songs and Jovel in BANG Niang.

By day, having exhausted two World Class dive/snorkel sites in the Surins and Similans, there is little snorkelling from the beach all along the coastline because there are no reefs and the ocean is constantly moving. There are various elephant treks if you enjoy that sort of thing, the best IMHO being Sairung Elephant Camp and Trek just north of Le Meridien Resort.

For trekking on foot though, you would be better booking a day or even overnight tour to the wonderful Khao Sok National Park and the staggering Cheow Lan Lake. The NP is just over an hour north of KL and the Lake an hour further on than that. Plenty of details on the Khao Sok Forum at tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowForum-g1657011-i16537-… You could stay in a tree house at Khao Sok and in a floating raft house on Cheow Lan Lake.

So 3 days Khao Sok/Cheow Lan, 6 days Khao Lak and 5 days Phuket, somewhere like the lovely Nai Thon Beach which is only 15 minutes from Phuket Airport which is very handy if you are flying back from there - see http://www.phuket-maps.com/naithon-beach.htm

If you don't want nightlife, then you rely on tours to other places like Phang Nga Bay, which you can do from Khao Lak. It really depends what you want to do during the day, if you just want to chi;ll out at night.

Phang Nga and Phuket are completely different. The attraction of Phang Nga is the wonderful Phang Nga Bay, famous for James Bond Island but this is one of its lesser attractions. The other islands and formations are far more spectacular and no tour there is complete without a trip in a sea canoe into the islands into the lagoons within. These are usually day tours that can be done from Phang Nga Town, which is an interesting non-touristy town but with caves to explore (with guides), or from Phuket or from Khao Lak. Phuket is far more commercialised than Phang Nga or Khao Lak.

I will stay in Khao Sok Tree House Resort 3 days. Sounds very interesting!

Well, i only have to decide the last days between Phuket and Phang Nga. I will pick up just one.

In what area do you recomend to stay in each place??

So the easiest way to get to the tours...

Thank you

Of course, I would recommend you sstay in Khao Lak and book tours from there but if between 5 days in Phuket or 5 days in Phang Nga I would choose Phuket but not one of the commercial resport areas of Patong or Karon. Kata Beach is quieter and has the better beach but if you are looking for more independent advice about Phuket I would ask on the Phuket Forum. I am too biased towards Khao Lak. :-)
