Currency Exchanges in Khao Lak - Debit Cards?

Hi,

Have read through the FAQs regarding thailand money & banks and have decided to get 90% of our cash in Thailand when we arrive.

Just wanted to check for certain that there is no need to take english £notes to thailand to exchange and that a debit card can be used instead at the forex booths etc....?

Cheers,

Why 90%? Why change any in UK at all. If you are arriving at Bangkok Airport you can change sterling to baht while waiting for your luggage to come through. Just get enough for immediate needs then you can use ATMs in Khao Lak as and when. The amount you can draw at an ATM is the daily limit imposed by your bank andf you wioll be charged 150 baht per withdrawal by the Thai bank in addition to any charges made by your bank. An exception to this is if you want a larger amount go into the bank in Khao lak with your Debit Card and passport and ask for a sum in excess of your daily limit. They might try and persuade you to use the machine twice but just say you need more than your bank's limit. Also until when we left in April, and depending where you are staying you could use the Bank of Ayudhya ATM outside the 711 MiniMart in Bang Niang opposite the Police Boat. There was no 150 baht charge then and I hope there still will be none when we return shortly.

Thanks for your post Arandora.

90% simply because this is our first time in thailand, would just prefer to have a small amount of cash on us at arrival.

We are arriving at Phuket airport from Kuala Lumpur..... is there any forex exchange booths etc there?

Also, are there any foreign exchange places to steer clear of!?

Cheers

Hi,

We arrive via KL too. There are ATMs and booths in the Arrivals Hall at Phuket Airport. Whilst each bank gives a different rate of exchange, particularly for initial needs the difference is only marginal.

If you don't already monitor the daily rates of the various banks at …daytodaydata.net/default.aspx To show rates for ATMs use the TT rate in the drop down box.

The Kasikorn Bank has a reputation of "swallowing" cards for no apparent reason. It happened to me at one in Bang La On outside the Nang Thong Supermarket and to a friend at the one outside the 711 in Bang Niang (staff inside said "it's always doing that."). You need to go to the branch in Bang La On with your passport to get the card back, which is a pain!

Don't,. as a rule, exchange money from the money changer booths (as opposed to forex ones) as the rate is usually lower and charges higher.
