Was I unlucky?

I stayed for a week in Khao Lak @ Le Meridien roughly a year ago.

The resort was so-so, gave it 3 in my review here on TA, but the horrible part to me was Khao Lak.

I do realize there's loads of people who cross the world to spend their holiday by a pool, that's not me though. I'm a beach & sea lover, and while the beach was long, sandy and fairly immaculate the sea was horrible to say the very least. Brown water, loads of dead fish, long tail boats and men fishing in the swimming area of the hotel.. and the weather was disgraceful despite being March high season.

Sadly it was prepaid otherwise I would have rushed back to Phuket.

From various photos of the Meridien I see that the sea doesn't get a lot better than what I got. Is it different in other areas?

The weather was a disgrace? Who shall we to complain to? Next time tell them to get it right!

Men fishing in the swimming area of the hotel... not in the pool I hope. If its the beach then its public property and men (or women) can fish all they want, and probably need the money they earn from fishing just to survive, while you sip your cocktail and glare at them disapprovingly..

I thought dragonC's reply was fair in the context of your remarks but I'll try and address them more directly:

"but the horrible part to me was Khao Lak. " - other than the criticism of Le M and the beach/sea, it's hard to see how you can tar the whole of Khao lak with the same brush.

"the sea was horrible to say the very least. Brown water, loads of dead fish... " if the sun is not shining (and you later complain that "the weather was disgraceful" so this may explain it) the ocean will appear brown, any ocean, not just at Le Meridien, even in Phuket! When the sun shines and it was shining in March 2009, albeit with an uncommonly high amount of rain, as we were staying just around the headland near White Sand Beach, the ocean is a glorious turquoise, although not clear because of the constant movement.

As for dead fish, yes, you do get fish washing up as Pak Weeb is still an active fishing beach but fish will be washed inshore from out at sea or from around the headland up towards Cape Pakarang where the fishing boats are moored. I have to say in all my years in Khao Lak in general and at the Le M in particular, and we regularly walk the beach there over the months we spend in Khao Lak, I have never seen longtails near the Le M beach frontage and never seen men, other than some guests with bought rods, fishing in the swimming area, even though strictly they are entitled to as all beaches are public, even in Phuket.

If you look at these pics taken between December 2009 and a couple of weeks ago I think you will see plenty of blue skies and blue sea on Pak Weeb Beach, including at the Le M. picasaweb.google.com/Arandora/PakWeeb…

I'm sorry the weather disappointed you. That's not the fault of Khao Lak or Le M.

We can't all be Khao Lak Lovers but to blame it for the weather is a tad unfair!

Hi,

I was also there in March 2009 staying at the Le Meridien. It is fair to say that there was a few dead fish on the beach but I only saw odd ones. The fishermen that I saw were actually LM staff who like to fish and usualy do this from the beach in front of the water sports section. I have only ever seen one longtail boat at the Le Meridien and it was only passing and quite a good way out at sea.I have often made comment that compared to some beaches in Thailand you never see a longtail by the Le Meridien.

Hi Julie,

I'm almost scared to finally get a normal answer lol

I must say it's funny how many versions of things there can be...

I'm almost positive I was there the first week of March and I remember meeting on of the Meridien managers on the beach while I was walking by the appointed swimming area on the beach..

As a matter of fact he had come down to the beach because they had gotten many complaints about that and he told me that they were complaining with the community board...

of course they are entitled to fish.. i'd hardly look at them in disapproval.. but you would figure with 20 miles of coast they can fish and throw their nets out of the swimming area??

Besides it's more of a complaint towards the hotel rather than the fishermen.. if it works like that be it.. but the hotel shouldn't tell you that area is safe for swimming when you risk getting caught in a net and drown...

Gianera,

With nrespect I think it is you being a little disingenuous. I took great care to address your specific criticisms of the Le Meridien area and your unfair ones of Khao Lak. If you could have been more specific in asking for examples of other areas/beaches in Khao Lak, I could have for instance pointed you to this thread tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297914-i10908-k… which shows pics over 5 months earlier last/this year of all of Khao Lak's beautiful beaches or this one from last year between March and April when we stayed in the Similan beach villa just nearby to the Le M probably at the same time you were there picasaweb.google.com/Arandora/SimilanVilla… - plenty of blue sky and sea there (without any Photoshop assistance) and dead fish but they were delicious ones for eating though!

Gianera - Just had a look at some of your other threads (Why do you like Patong?) and I think it is very fair to say that YOU in fact are the crazy one.

I have never heard someone with such an attitude problem. Although it does amuse me I am not at all surprised that your posts get deleted.

Take a chill pill, relax, and use some manners!

I will wait paitently for your rude reply..
