Krabi or Khao Lak for December Honeymoon

Krabi or Khao Lak for December Honeymoon

We are considering Krabi and Khao Lak as destinations for our honeymoon in late Dec '10 to early Jan '11.

We want to be able to avoid crowds as much as possible while still engaging in activities and excursions. Which location would be a better choice for a honeymoon during that period?

I saw that many resorts in Khao Lak including le meridien, sarojin etc have min. stays. We want to be there for about 4 days 3 nights and spend <2000USD for accomodation.

Not sure about Krabi. But beaches just outside of the main part of Khao Lak are beautiful and quiet, and easy to get into the main part if wanted. As you mentioned The Sarojin is probably the most beautiful here. It is on Pakarang Beach. But not sure if it is in your budget as it will be peak season and it is pricey. Also, try JW Marriot in Khao Lak. It is on Khuk Khak beach. Both resorts have shuttle buses to & from town.

As for activities and excursions, Khao Lak is close to the famous Similan islands, as well as Khao Sok National Park. Plus there are many waterfalls in the area.

Maybe someone else can help tell you more about Krabi as I have only spent a short time there.

Yes. The sarojin is definitely out of budget. We will be considering the JWM if we decide to go to khao lak. Is it easy to go for excursions/activities from here? What hours do the shuttles operate during? Are there other good food options around? What kind of price range are we looking at for food both inside and outside the hotel?

Anyone else with inputs on Krabi?

hi, the jwm and le meridien are good choices for khao lak getting in to town is easy by shuttle or taxi the shuttles tend to start at around 6 p.m. about 3 a night.

as for krabi you are probably looking at either tubkaak beach or klong muang .

good hotels to considerat tubkaak;

the amari vogue

the anyavee

tubkaak resort

at klong muang;

the nakamanda

the sheraton

sofitel phokeethra

please note there is nothing at tubkaak apart from the hotels and at klong muang there are a few few restaurants shops and tour shops.at the end of the day the choice can only be yours and congratulations on your wedding and honeymoon

Hi Tubkaak Beach krabi is very nice where you have the Amari Vouge and also the Tubkaak but not much else both resorts are popular for honeymooners with views of the Hong Islands. Outside dining options apart from the hotels would be taxi to either Krabi town or Ao Nang the latter which is quite commercial or to Klong Muang village. You would be able to get boat excursions from Tubkaak Beach to the Hong Islands, chicken, poda and Tup Island and Railay Phranang Beach also Excursions to Bamboo and Phi Phi Islands. Krabi is a lovely scenic place but has many longtail boats going to and from the beaches and offshore Islands Ao Nang in particular which is a working beach for the longtail boats.

Khao Lak has wondeful beaches and I think the best of all is Pak Weeb where you will find the Le Meridien which is beautiful. Jw Marriott is also in a very nice spot on Khuk Khak and both have access to a handful of outside restaurants. You should be able to avoid crowds on both of these beaches as sometimes you can walk for miles without seeing anybody especially towards Bangsak. You will be able to arrange activities and excursions easily . Travel into either Bang Niang or Bang La On is easily done from both of these hotels . Khao Lak IMHO is a perfect destination and should tick your boxes as it has a good selection of hotels ,fantastic beaches but also good authentic thai restaurants .

Thanks Jenson and everyone else.

It does look like Amari vogue is an excellent choice in Krabi but it is just a bit too far from everything else (tubkaak is not in our budget). That makes Krabi either too crowded or too secluded.

Any Krabi lovers who can persuade me to think otherwise?

So Khao Lak does seem like a better option at the moment. I will look into Khao Lak a bit more and get back on this thread or create another topic with more questions.

we would choose KL over krabi every time- there is no comparison.

Have a look at the orchid resort- it would be perfect for a honeymoon. so beautiful and the staff are so helpful. right on the beach (as are many others!) fantastic place, we have gone the past three years because we have become addicted to the beauty and peace of the place.

there are many excursions from all of khao lak, but do try and take in a snorkelling trip- fantastic similan travel is good fun! Khao sok national park is also very close for lots of adventure as well, but it is really the beach that you come to KL for.

wish we were back at the orchid now, swimming around the orchid islands in the pool, or lazing in the gorgeous beach loungers, or lighting a lantern on the beach, or catching the shuttle into town (frequent and cheap at 50B) to wander around for dinner (unless you prefer candlelit dinner on the beach itself, compliments of the hotel)- see the honeymoon package on their website.

KL is such a wonderful place! Have fun.

Khao Lak gets my vote. There will be less people & the restaurants although they are spread out, you will get far better choices.

Doing a day trip to Krabi would be nice the scenery is just beautiful but Khao Lak definately has the better beaches & more relaxed feel . CJ

I think I am sold on Khao Lak.

Now to look at accomodation options. I am looking at the following to start with:

Le Meridien - gr8 location and hotel, (although we can afford the deluxe rooms only) but shows unavailability on the website until I enter 7 days. If they have a 7 night min., we don't have the time or money for that

JWMarriot - gr8 location and hotel (again, we can afford the deluxe pool view rooms only but it looks like most of the hotel has the same type of rooms). Hope there is no new years compulsory dinners that would add to the cost.

La Flora - Concerned about it being at the relatively busy bang niang beach. Can get beach front villa for the price of the above two but it looks like our privacy may be compromised from the pictures. Sun beds, pathways etc are really close to the villas.

Any other recommendations for suitable honeymoon accomodation in Khao Lak? We can't afford the Sarojin because of its 5 night min stay policy. Our budget is <2000USD.

Having said all that, I wondering if we should wait for a while before deciding on whether we even want to go to Thailand or just be safe and go to Langkawi. The recent political developments have got me worried. It would be a pity if the BKK airport (through which we would likely have to fly to Phuket) is closed down or there is more violence in the rest of the country etc. I am concerned that this situation will climax when we go there.

You could also have a look at the Haadson Resort which is at Bangsak 5-7 minutes further up by road from the Le Meridien a beautiful stretch of beach and has a handful of restaurants popular with the local people and a very nice spot for lunch and dinner.

hi avd

Khao lak would be an excellent choice, and don't worry about the political situation in Bangkok, its unlikely to affect your travels as you will only be in transit and not going out onto the streets

If your budget is worrying you as its an expensive time to stay then look at a lower cost resort, i know all the bigger flash one's are mostly what you want but as long as you get a nice clean comfortable resort on a nice quiet beach and you are together that's all that matters,

my son and his (then new wife) are staying at Suwan Palm Resort, (Jan 2011 for 4 nights so no limit on nights spent there, everything is too expensive for them then) its only a small boutique resort with 42 rooms, so nice and not crowded, beachfront (Nang Thong beach)not a very big pool but enough for them to relax by, and not too far to the shops etc, pretty good location really, they are really looking forward to it and they booked direct and got a good honeymoon deal in a 1 bedroom suite room with a double balcony overlooking the sea, 5,00bhat a night, (20,000bhat total 4 nights)and the manager threw in a romantic beachfront dinner for them too, the reviews were not too bad either, think the website is:

www.suwanpalm.com if you want to look at it, if you e-mail him his name is Sam

we are staying at Khao Lak Merlin Beach but its low season when we go so got a good deal on it, but its a nice quiet area and they do pool access and villa rooms might be worth a look too www.merlinphuket.com (its listed on there)

also try asiarooms.com put in your dates and Khao Lak and see what they show available, to see if the one's you want are available, La Flora is far from busy, its a lovely resort, but also Yes you will have to check out gala dinner prices too or another alternative is to wait till after about Jan 11th, prices come down a bit (not a lot ) and no gala dinners to pay for?? Le Meridien prices come down from 4th jan

good luck hope you find your dream place :)
