Xmas & New Year in Khao Lak

Hi everyone

We're looking at spending Christmas and New Year in Khao Lak for my husband's 40th. Whilst we not big party people, we're a bit concerned that there may be not enough atmosphere for us in Khao Lak for New Year's Eve.

Please can someone let me know if there are indeed any celebrations and suggest places we could go to. I would hate to go all that way and miss the New Year celebrations.

Thanks very much

Moo2

There are plenty of New Year's Celebrations in Khao Lak. Although we are not staying there we joined the New Year's Eve Gala Buffet Dinner BBQ at the Ching Fah Resort on Bang Niang Beach. Excellent buffet, party games, traditional Thai dance show, Angels ladyboy show, music and dance and at midnight the most spectacular firework display all along the beach resorts from Sunset Beach to Khuk Khak Beach and inland followed by the release of lanterns into the starlit sky.

Other resorts have similar celebrations either included if you are a guest or join in just for the night.

Xmas Eve was a bit more low key but on Xmas Day our party of 4 and Australian friends of 5, enjoyed a sunset dinner at Ma-Ma Lek's on the beautiful Pak Weeb Beach. We had cocktails followed by lobster and white snapper and, again, ending with the release of lanterns.

For us it was an unforgettable Xmas and New Year's.

Thanks very much for your reply Arandora

That all sounds fantastic. Would we have to pre-book something like that or just turn up?

Do the celebrations go on into the night, or finish at midnight?

Is Bang Niang Beach a good place to stay? As we've never been to Thailand before, I'm a bit unsure as to the size of the differents places. Would all the resorts in Khao Lak be easily accessible on New Year's Eve?

We've noticed that many hotels insist that you pay for their New Year celebrations even if you don't plan on joining them which is a shame.

We haven't decided on a hotel yet so are open to any suggestions.

Thanks

When deciding where you want to stay including Xmas/New Year, I would in initially ignore those two dates and decide what you want out of your entire stay in Khao Lak. If you are looking for a full service 4 or 5* resort in a premier position e.g sea front with all facilities, then you will probably have to pay a compulsory Xmas or New Year surcharge, whether you take it up or not and how reasonable that surcharge is.

However, if you are happy, like us, with more modest but still excellent value for money accommodation, perhaps one road back (5 minutes from the beach) you can just pay for the Xmas or New Year dinner/event as a non-resident and overall will cost you far less. We booked the Chong Fah in advance as you are allocated tables. Probably advisable to do this in other resorts too.

Xmas Eve was comparatively quiet for a Xmas Eve - just another night out. After our Xmas Dinner on the beach away from Bang Niang, we went in search of some festivities but found they were more concentrated in the bigger resorts. The local bars were, again, just another night.

For New Year, the special buffet/dinner went on until about 1pm and afterwards there were a few local bars carrying on partying with the Degree Bar (live music) up on the highway attracting a full house and carrying on until, well, whenever the last paying customer left.

There were a few taxis about to get to you from Bang Niang to Bang La On (also known as Khao Lak or Khao Lak Town) but the situation was the same there with most people going to the Dragon Bar or the Happy Snapper.
